Alaska Railroad Scenes - 1949

My father worked for the Alaskan Railroad in the late 1940's, having previously worked for the Alaska Steamship Company until it was discovered he was not quite 14 years old. Somehow on his way back to California, he came across some "modified" paperwork that was his ticket to enlist in the US Navy. World War II opened up lots of opportunities. A few years after the war, and back in California, he met my mother, who had also been to Alaska- as a member of the Women's Army Corps- WAC - and they decided Alaska was where they wanted to be...

Nice!! Thanks for sharing.

Isn't it amazing that these photos are over 70 years old and still retain their strong contrast where color photos from...say...40 years ago have faded and colors have shifted.

I love those chairs... they're so comfy... and durable! I never sat in THESE chairs but, bus stations had the same ones... Funny, I can smell the people and tobacco smoke...

You're right, Dodie, but I'll admit to kicking up the contrast a bit via Lightroom- probably didn't need to but I like to play... !!!!
