I've had a portable XM radio in my cars for years. It has a lifetime subscription, but it stopped receiving a signal the other day. All I could listen to was XM promotional material. Going online, I found a link to send a reactivation signal to the radio. Within five minutes, it was working again.

Looking back at my XM notes, I see that in 2010, they did an automatic renewal for a different radio at the regular price - $462 for a year. I canceled that. The lifetime subscription, which I got in 2019, cost $476. It was a lot to pay at the time, but it's averaged out to about $3.00/month. When this radio dies, or they cancel my subscription, the subscription dies with it. They allow only one transfer (for $75), and I've used it.

Jerry, SiriusXM can be bargained with. We just leased a new car & added it to my other car. It was going to be $20 plus per car after the complimentary 3 months & 4 month extension (for $2 TOTAL).
I asked if they offered discounts for senior citizens on fixed incomes. YES! After the free trial on the new car I’ll be paying $7/month for each for a year. This is the second time I’ve asked for a Senior/fixed income discount. Admittedly, the first time was better. $20 for the year.
Lost my favorite, channel 55, the Garth channel as he retired it.
BTW, you can add the SiriusXM app to any device including streaming TV devices for no additional charges.
I’m wondering if I can use the App on my iPhone to push it to the radio/entertainment center of one of the 2 cars after this year and have only one charge.

Never mind what some folks say about your posts, Jerry. I, and many other UHHers, enjoy your musings and information every day.

Many do not understand the lifetime membership applies to the equipment's lifetime.

I refuse to talk to them on the phone. They'll start at a price of $100, and after an hour, they'll get down to $10. Just try to cancel a subscription. You'll get talking and talking and transferring. Is this any way to run a business? I'm paying nothing for XM now, and I'm going to keep it that way. I have two USB ports in my car plus a CD player, so XM isn't essential.

The point of the post was to show how easy it is to get your XM radio going if it stops receiving programming.

Sort of. You're allowed one transfer, and I used that when I sold that car. If the original radio died, you could transfer it to another.

We had a similar situation with Sirius. The first time we had it we were paying $20 per month. Tried that for a while and when the subscription ran out we canceled. They came back with another offer and we declined. This continued for a while until we got an offer of $99 for 3 years. That is less than $3 per month. We signed on for that one.

Not sure how that business model works. Probably not so good as Sirius stock is around $10/share. That is almost in the penny stock range.

I guarantee it will go lower if I buy it.

I've never seen the need for subscription radio! I can get everything I need off the normal broadcast bands for free and in some areas there is even HD radio subchannels available if you have a radio capable of tuning digital radio.

As they say, "Location, location, location." In my location, I have very few choices. When I travel cross country, I'm not really interested in listening to farm reports.

They can be hardball negotiators but if you persevere, you can get a good price.
Here is what I have figured out over the last 10 years and 5 different cars.

Wait until you are about 3 or 4 days away from the end of your trial period.
You MUST physically call them, you cannot barter online. Just play the game by refusing their initial offers.
You will get the run-a-round with a couple of unacceptable offers.
After you refuse those, they will usually transfer you to an ‘Account Specialist’ who will make additional offers.
Just keep refusing until you finally get to about $5/mo. It may be $25/5 mo. or $30/6 mo.

I had to do this for a couple of years. Last year they finally offered me $60/yr. and I got it for both cars.

Also, with your subscription, they may not tell you this, they have a mobile app for cell phones & a Windows app that is free.
