I'm almost always "closer is better". But here, I think the beauty of the clouds and the small random plane is better than the version with the larger plane and less cloud.

I'd say there's not much difference aesthetically. As usual it all boils down to what your intention or preference is. #1 says small plane in big sky whereas #2 says these clouds are worth a closer look, and the increased plane size is coincidental. Since the plane is in silhouette there aren't any details to zoom in on so the zooming would seem to be all about the clouds. If that was your intention, fair enough. To my eye the clouds are equally appealing in both.

#2 is a nice crop from the original. The first image has s stronger interest with the difference in expanse and size perspectives not available with the crop. Better would depend on your purpose for each.
