Just received an email from "PayPal" indicating my account had been hacked and that I owed $300 for the purchase of gift cards that someone made on my account. The senders email was different from PayPal. Be aware and do not send money.

I just received an email from"Fed Ex" stating they couldn't deliver my package. First of all, I don't have anything ordered that is being delivered by Fed Ex. Knowing it was a scam I checked the sender...not Fed Ex.
I hit the SPAM button so it's gone.

I got one too claiming that I had rented a truck for a lot more money than yours. I deleted it hoping that would end it!

I get those for "undeliverable packages", I have nothing on order...
And the ones where my "account" has been charged for <iPad, computer, laptop> and shipped to someone else.
The only thing given is "Call this number if there is a problem: "....
They never say what account.

Whenever I get a scam email that asks for any information, the first thing I do is look at the return email address. It is usually a personal email account. PayPal, bank, or Amazon to mention a few will never send an email like that. Check the actual email address of the entity that is claiming that you have a problem. It will never be like the one in your scam email. Also go online and query PayPay email scams. There will be a lot of information.

I had received something similar. I received an e-mail from a friend who wanted me to buy some gift cards and send them to him. I said I would because I knew he had passed away two years before. I asked what we are doing for a mutual friend’s birthday party. Pur friend, the second party passed away five years ago.
Many times these scammers will hack into your email. The best thing to do is ignore these clowns. But you could have some fun with them. Ask them if they had a good time with a stripper or something like that. Tell them that if they don’t send you $1000 you will tell their spouse. I love making people squirm in the stupidity.

Be cautious on reporting things to PayPal. I reported numerous scam emails to PayPal security and now I am embroiled in a dispute with PayPal because PayPal arbitrarily "closed" my account, stating "You can no longer use PayPal" due to suspicious activity.
I had a long telephone conversation with PayPal and after a bunch of cryptic B.S., I was able to peel back the layers of the onion and they escalated my case to the next level. I have used PayPal very infrequently, and my last two transactions were regarding gear purchases I made for from UHH members. PayPal inquired about these transactions and accepted my explanation. The dialogue ended with PayPal indicating that the "closure" may have been in error and they will reopen my account pending final review within 5-10 business days and I would be notified via email as to the outcome. It's been nearly two weeks now without hearing anything more from PayPal.
Having a PayPal account is not a life necessity for me. It is somewhat convenient but after having so many scam attempts directed at me from nefarious individuals using PayPal as a modus operandi, I now consider PayPal to be more of a financial vulnerability than a fiscal tool.
The biggest thorn in my side is that PayPal will not allow me to delete my account nor will they allow me to delete any bank accounts or credit card accounts that are linked to my PayPal account. My credit union is working with me to solve this issue.
I have had enough of my relationship with PayPal and will feel much safer when the divorce is final.
Just my $0.02.

Sorry you had that much trouble. I have been a member for 22 years and never had an issue.
I called them many years ago about a suspicious email and they asked that I forward it to that address.
Every time I do, I get a courteous email, thanking me for being conscientious and willing to help.

My past experience had been the same as yours until this wrinkle popped up a few weeks ago. It is a real mystery as to what actually happened to create their logarithm to flag my account, if it wasn't the numerous scam attempts that I reported. I would really like to get a full understanding and a final resolution and move on from there. Thank you for your reply.

The hackers seem to have developed the ability to send e-mails from what seem to be legitimate e-mails. My Facebook account was hacked with e-mails that appeared to be real Facebook addresses, spelled correctly.
