Costco has a d 7000 and 18-200 lens for $1600.00. Is that as good of a deal as it seems to me ?

Its as good as you will get anywhere on that combo. Just make sure the 18-200 is the one with the GOLD "VR" on it as oppsed to the RED "VR" version, it should be.

Adding to MT Shooter's comments - Costco doubles your warranty, has maybe a 90 day, no questions asked, return policy. Anything I can buy at the right price from them I do.

I wish we had a Costco nearby. The closest is a couple of hours away.

I paid about $1,200 for my D7000 in 2008 and about $650 for the 18-200mm. Now the D7000 is selling for about $1,000, and the lens is over $800. The gold VR is the newest version, VR II.

You can get the same prices at Costco.com

However for purchases like this I'm inclined towards Amazon because they do not yet charge sales tax where I live. If I buy in-store or from Costco on line I pay sales tax. Since I use Amazon prime I get free shipping...although most online retailers now provide free shipping on such purchases.

You can check Abes of Maine. Their price is good. Customer service is Unparallel. On and off I have bought my camera products (including a D7000) from them for a long time. Currently their pacakge price for Nikon D 7000 with Nikkor 18-200 VRII lens with US warranty is $ 1596.00. When you buy from them, they will include a few more accessories (not quite high class, but they come free) along with no shipping charge and no tax.

Getting them on the phone is almost impossible. We've bought a lot from them - including a 55" TV - because we pay no sales tax (8%).

Yes, better option for you because Amazon gets you for sales tax.

I understand Amazon going to start collecting from everyone soon. At least I know they have agreed to collect it for California. I don't recall if it s 2013 or 2014.

Worst case I have the option to drive to Oregon.

And the $4 a gallon gas would be cheaper than the sales tax?

On the D600 package the sales tax is $180...so we could go quite a ways.

But for now Amazon still doesn't charge us sales tax.

Well, you could stay a few days and take some photos. There are a few spots around here worth setting up the tripod for.

MT:

I have the first version of the 18-200.

Every site that I have checked online tells me the same thing. The lenses are identical except the "Gold" lens has the anti-creep lock. I know it says VR II, but I am assured that the the original lens has the VRII, it just wasn't a marketing ploy at that time.

My lens began to creep shortly after I bought it. I have included a photo of my fix. A $2 wristband from Radio Shack. You can position it to give just enough drag so that the lens holds its position.
