Hi,
I just got the Sony A7IV, I have read the directions, watched youtube videos but I just cannot seem to be able to update the firmware.

I am using an SD card, I have downloaded the 1.05 update, I put it in the camera, go to version, the *software update* is greyed out.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try it with a fully charged battery.
The update must be in the root directory of the freshly formatted (in camera) SD card. The SD card must be in slot 1.
When updating from v1.01 or earlier, you need to update to v1.05 first (released at the same time as v1.10) before updating to v1.10.

Of course I did. I always format the cards in the camera.

Any chance the SD card was accidentally locked or is defective? Did you check on your computer to see if the update was copied successfully? It sounds like the file is not being detected by the camera.

No, not a chance. It would not have reformatted if it was. I did try a few different SD cards. Same issue.
I am on with B&H, they will have someone call me back to help.
Sony is not available today.

The reason I asked is that I once (like a klutz) managed inadvertently to lock the card at some point when I was removing it from the computer to reinsert in the camera after downloading image files!

Ok, I finally figured it out. I was using Google chrome to download the firmware. I decided to try a different browser and it worked!!!!
I have done one update and am now doing the second one.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions.

Why would the lock matter if reading but not writing ?

It is not unknown that a card reader can sometimes have an issue detecting a locked card.

For example Dell recommends checking to make sure the card is unlocked as Step 1 for diagnosing a reader which is not detecting a card.

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000150063/sd-memory-card-reader-not-reading-the-sd-memory-card

And I would not be 100% sure that installing a program file (such as a firmware update) from an SD card is not sufficiently interactive as to require full access to the card.

Interesting, and glad to hear you were successful. Two nights ago I was trying to buy a lens from MPB. Using Chrome (which I normally use and have in the past used with this vendor), I kept getting an "unable to complete the transaction" message. Using Firefox it sailed through. So these glitches do happen from time-to-time.

So you know there is a 1.10 version.
