You may not have been trying to document them, but you caught the "feel" of them very well!
The low viewpoint of the first says "power", and I like the way the clouds separate the details on the top of the engine – without the clouds, those details would have disappeared against the dark sky.
The vignetting of the second adds a feeling of age, and the selective color gives it a nice "pop!"

Agree. You needed to take a step backward for the first. The clipping of both the front and rear of the locomotive spoils it for me.

Thanks everyone for viewing and commenting. I was just having fun with these images. I didn't trying to document and post them in the train section. I just selectively cropped, made them a little gritty and played with blending a little color back into the American. Had I posted these in the train section, the ferroequinologists would have hunted me down, hung me from the nearest railway water tower and buried me in coal dust.
My dad was one, so I know how particular he could be documenting trains. I have other images I'm playing with from the same outing, but trying to create a sense of motion, rather than just a stationary image.
Regarding the crop of the first one, there was an ugly visitor viewing platform attached to the cab at the rear right of the image and there was nothing in front of the train, not even rail. So I cropped a little tight to eliminate those distractions from the image. Maybe a little compositing or a better angle during the next visit will help.
