Tynemouth is a town that as the name suggests sits at the mouth of the Tyne river in the northeast of England. The Castle and priory (remains of) sit on a headland adjacent to the mouth of the river. This headland has been a stronghold and a place of worship for over 2000 years, although only written records date from the eighth century, when a wooden church occupied the site, this church was destroyed by Viking invaders. My wife along with my daughter/husband and grandson visited there a few weeks ago.
This is the entrance to the castle, with part of the moat in front.
the family entering what was the Priory
what a shame these beautiful buildings were desecrated.
The site was ringed by WW1 guns, as the Tyne and its docks were a target of the Germans who on one occasion sent two battleships down the east coast of England and shelled various coastal towns. The building to the right is a coast guard station.
this was the only priory building with a roof on, protecting it from the elements.
My wife and daughter sat outside, you can just see the harbour entrance top right.
This is looking into the lovely Town from inside the Castle. It has a broad high street lined with cafes and pubs (one which we had our lunch).
Looking down on a sandy beach from the entrance of the Castle.
looking up at the entrance of Castle. the large statue is situated quite a distance away, it is dedicated to vice admiral 'lord Collingwood' who took over command in the battle of Trafalgar when lord nelson was killed, Collingwood hailed from Tynemou
That place just drips history. Excellent series.
Thanks for the great photos and descriptions of the site, very interesting.

Great set of photos. I would love to visit this site but at my age I don't think it is possible now.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful trip, Doddy!

Great set of shots. I don't dare show them to my wife or we will be going back to England, Scotland, and Ireland in the near future. She loves looking at all her heritage from those areas.
