This is my first post . I am a real novice when it comes to being knowledgable about photography . I had a Nikon
Coolpix 100 that was stolen , and now I am interested in moving up to a DSLR . I have been researching lots of different camaras and am kind of confused as to what to replace my lost camara with . I keep looking at a Leica and
would appreciate any info on this camara that anyone could
give me . Is it a good camara ? What model do you suggest
getting as an entry level to DSLR photography ? Prices ?
Any info I would be thankful for . OR do any of you folks suggest a different camara for a beginner like me ?

Leica has a very good reputation. I can suggest no specific models. Google is your friend.

Hi,

Here is a web site that let's you compare many camera models. I don't know if they have the Leica models that interest you but the following is set to compare what I believe to be the two most popular "entry level" DSLRs.

Sonys are also top notch. Some say you just can't go wrong with today's models from any major maker.

Nikon has one lower level, the D 3100, which is also fabulous. My daughter in law bought hers the first of September, the same time I bought my D5100. The thing she liked it that it has "Guide mode" that is very helpful for a beginner with a DSLR.

We both got ours in great kits from Costco with two zoom lenses; an 18-55 and a 55 to 200 for her, 300 for me.

Larry Leach

Is Leica a good camera.
Yes you are a newbe in the camera world. It is the most famous name in the world of photography. And nobody can build lens glasses like Leica. Their quality is superior to any other lens in the world.

Leica cameras are overpriced and overated, even a lousy neckstrap saying LEICA will cost you an arm and leg.If you take a photo with Leica and with any major maker camera brand with similar design you will not see any difference.DSLR may be for some users even counterproductive, you should decide how far you want to take your photography and what you will need for it,then decide.Myth #1 is top of the line camera will get you top photos. All cameras are just tools, more important is what the photographer can do with it.In another words a more expensive hammer will not build you a better house if you are not much of a carpenter.

is leica a good camera? is rolls royce a good autoomobile? is dom periogn a good champagne? did stradavarius make a good fiddle? it and hasenblad are considered the top cameras, and you will pay for that prestige. for starting out try any of the major camera manufactureres, nikon cannon, sony, olympus or pentax. there are no dog cameras out there. all the manufacturers make good solid entry level cameras. go to a professional camera shop (not ritz/wolf or the big box stores) and try out various makes and models.

Hi greenjeans. My advice would be- don't let yourself be blinded by science or other folks preducices. You could never get a Canon owner to admit a Nikon could be better anymore than the Chevy truck owner would be seen dead in a Ford 150! Of course there will be some features on one model that you might prefer to those on another model or brand but as a newcomer to DSLR's I wouldn't fret about it. Just chose one of those on the site I suggested and learn to love it!
Here is a useful site that compares entry-level DSLRs.

I concur with the Alaskan... a more expensive hammer will not build you a better house ! Check with a good camera store and tell them what kind of photographer you want to be and they will recommend and let you try one of the cameras that would be appropriate for your needs...also consider your budget ! Leica may be the Rolls Royce of cameras but any of the major manufactures of todays cameras put out a quality product. Good luck !

Greenjeans,
Leica is a great camera, no one can deny it, now for me I find it overpriced but you do get a great camera. I would recommend any good DSLR from the major manufacturers. You say you are a beginner, that to me says you may not stick with photography for any length of time, so expensive cameras should not be considered. Buy the Canon or Nikon low end DSLRs they are both great companies and have phenomenal cameras for the beginner. If you really get hooked on photography then buy the Leica.

Is a Ferrari the best car? No, I should know: I own one; uncomfortable and impractical on long trips. Is the Leica the best camera? In my opinion, no. Would I like to own one? Yes!!! I love its feel, the superb quality of its lenses as well as portability. It is the only camera I would take on long journeys and trekking assignments in lieu of my Nikon D700 with its 24-70mm (the "beast") lens. Would I pay nearly $9,000 for an M-9 body and basic lens? Sorry no, not in my budget!

You ndidn't mension if you are looking at the "M" series (rangefinder) or the "S" series (DSLR). Both Leica series are high priced cameras and are top of the line on par with Haselblad, but you don't need that type of investment unless mony means nothing to you. Look at any of the premier brands like Nikon, Canon, Sony and more. Researsch their flagship models all the way down to the entry level and determin what you can aford and would be happy with. Go to a photo store in the area and handle some diffrent cameras to see how they feel in your hands and if the sales clerk is knowledgable they might even give you some advise.

Try a kit camera from a place like Costo. You will get a camera body, usually 2 lenses, a bag, strap, software and various goodies. And reasonably priced, too. If you like it, you can expand, if not, you are not into your new hobby for all that much, less than a thousand dollars.

One of two things will happen-- You will catch the bug and want more lenses to learn, maybe a bigger camera--photoshop, filters etc.--- or somewhere, somehow you will loose interest and your camera will end up on a drawer or shelf gathering dust.
If you catch the bug and want to move up-- well-- I have 3 older dslr nikons that I continue to use -- one has become a teaching camera, one is ever ready for that grab shot that turns up---
I like that they all use the same battery, Cf card and so on......

You get my point by now-- start with something that can let you grow should you wish to--

I own a Leica V-LUX 20. It's a great rangefinder camera that has my back as a backup camera to my Nikon D7000. Leica optics are world renowned. Here are a few examples of work shot with my Leica. The camera I use is not a DSLR but the bottom of the line pocket camera. It sells for over $700.
