Get the flash OFF the camera.

The reason you get this eye color is that the flash reflected of the cat's retina back into the camera. Same happens to people. You have several choices: Move to the side so the flash is not directly in front of the cat, use an off-camera flash cord so you can take the flash off the camera and hold it to the side, or have the cat look either right or left and not directly into the camera/flash combination. You do not have to get very far off axis to avoid this reflection. Hope this helps.

OK - then you tell me - how are you going to address that?

I'm just wondering how johno72 got the flash inside the cat! I'll bet it makes a great night-light.

johno....I get the same problem often. If all else fails use some photo editing software (I use CS3) Use the Sponge Tool (select under Dodge and Burn Tool) set it to "Desaturate" and pick a brush size to match the pupil area. When it's reduced to Mono, select the Burn tool set to Mid Tones and burn the pupil area to taste. Hope you don't mind me fiddling with yours. I had many an otherwise good photo narred by "red-eye" till I discovered how to fix it. I find myself using Photoshop a lot cos my photography skills leave a lot to be desired....hope this helps.

I use a Gary Fong Lightsphere and do not have any problems with the flash. Getting a cat to do what you want, that's a whole different problem.

This photo of my Max was taken with 2 580EXIIs off camera. Blasting direct flash at an animal will always produce that result.

And a friends cat,,,again,,off camera flash.

The Gary Fong Lightsphere is the best addition to my flash when I only have one and no way to take the flash off the camera. I wouldn't be without it.

Shouldn't be a problem. If the cat is like my cocker spaniel, it will eat anything.
