I shot this with my iPhone 13 Pro Max. At night. Not too bad.

A friend of mine just asked me a question about iPhone photography.
“Back to photography, I’m curious what your group is saying about the iPhone camera.”
She’s a very astute amateur photographer and I think she’s using an iPhone 13.
Personally, I have trouble using my iPhone XS Max, especially when there is insufficient light. Obviously, my first choice is my Nikon D5300.
Any thoughts/suggestions?

In 2015 some nutty NYU Prof says something outrageous to get attention, and somehow you think it’s relevant to this discussion about phone cameras?

Even when I’m carrying another camera I often use mine. It’s just a different camera. Better for some things and not others.

Oh oh something is wrong with my iPhone13 because it doesn’t leave my Nikon in the dust. 🤔
However the Nikon requires proper exposure and if over/under exposed color will not be optimum. The iPhone is simpler to use and takes less work to get good results.

Nice composition.
This scene is a good example of where a phone camera excels! It looks 3d and everything is in good focus. But the camera didn’t compose the photo!
Nice work.

I have a 13 Max (3 Lenses). I was surprised at the quality of the captures, particularly for showing on screen. I don't always have my DSLR with me and in a pinch I've found that the iPhone can do some wonderful work. I shot the attached shot last night as I was driving home.

The iPhone 13 is a spectacular camera. And a spectacular video camera. The cinematic feature on video is amazing. It is an excellent 2nd or 3rd camera. It has limits, as does everything. But the fact that it is nearly always at hand, has very good capabilities, makes it a go-to camera. I was recently on a fishing boat and had a small underwater camera. After catching a fish, I handed it to people to take shots. No one knew how to work the danged thing. So I switched to my Iphone 13. Excellent photos. And the camera is water resistant. The seamless way the thing uploads pics to the cloud is also outstanding. No more lost photos. My waterproof Fuji will be retired from fishing.
Add a cheap or free photo editing app to all of this and this system is great.
The iPhone is not good for action, moving shots, etc. There are some apps that allow for that but they are clunky. The vast majority of photos that mean anything are of family, friends, etc. The iPhone is good for capturing that.
As a vacation camera to capture memories of sites? It would be enough. I carry regular M43 gear with Pro lenses. But know that my iPhone is in my pocket as a great backup.
People can yammer about "real" cameras. They can also reminisce about horse collars, stick shift cars and when Bart Starr won the Super Bowl. But today, the system is excellent. And getting better all the time.
Technology moves on, regardless of what us geezers like. It is a good camera. See the excellent model in this photo. The moment would have passed by the time grandpa got a camera, set up the photo, blah blah. I was chasing a little crawling wiggle worm around and had no time for my mirror less wonder machine.
