We call those Airplane Bugs out here, I have no idea the scientific name.
I discovered Dahlias a couple of year ago. He was on a Dahlia growing by my front porch in Glenview Illinois.

Thanks!!! I wanted to call it an armored moth, but it doesn't have feathery antenna. More of a club shaped antenna like a butterfly. Very interesting :-)

Others have answered, but a further question - do its wings unfurl when it flies? They look too narrow to get it off the flower.
