Help with Canon camera error message 01

Hoping someone has an easy solution. Yesterday, my Canon 6D Mk II began producing an error message saying that the camera/lens contacts needed cleaning. I wiped both with a soft knit cloth as advised on a few websites. Then I shot 2 pics before getting the same error message again. The lens is the Canon 24-105 (several years old). I then changed to a different lens and everything worked fine. So it seems the lens contacts were the problem. Anyone know of a simple fix? Or will I have to get the lens checked out somewhere?

Thanks.

Any of this look familiar? https://www.google.com/search?q=canon+24-105+f4L+problems+error+01&rlz=1C9BKJA_enUS606US606&hl=en-US&sxsrf=ALiCzsYzC4bPlrYAqTBt7xAJDICx5AQDxQ%3A1661780005117&ei=JcAMY6neBpaQ0PEPpqiuoAk&oq=canon+24-105+f4L+problems+error+01&gs_lcp=ChNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwEAMyCAghEB4QFhAdOgcIABBHELADOgUIIRCgAToFCCEQqwJKBAhBGABQlQ5YhSdgmzJoAnABeACAAYYBiAGLA5IBAzAuM5gBAKABAcgBCMABAQ&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp

Yep, there is a known internal ribbon cable issue with some of the original MKI 24-105L lenses which produces this error. If cleaning the contacts doesn’t address the issue, that could be the cause - hopefully not because it’s not an inexpensive fix. I believe Canon charges in the region of $300 for this fix, but you may find an independent shop to do it for less. There are a zillion of these lenses avIlable used since they we’re the “kit” lens on many 5DIIIs, but while the used price isn’t much more than the fix, you run the risk of getting another copy that will fail over time. I’ve had this lens for at least 5 years without issue, but I’m not a heavy user.

Moreover, assuming the problem is the lens internals, rather than cleaning the lens and camera contacts, I'd suggest considering the v II that added a zoom lock to this lens design. In fact, I think all Canon zooms added locks after the problems of the original 24-105L that just flopped open when held facing down, a behavior that seems to stress and eventually breaks these internal ribbon cables.

Certainly, if considering a replacement with just the same vI lens, don't pay more for a used copy than what is needed to fix the broken copy. These lenses are in the $350 range used. With tax and shipping, depending on source, don't pay more than $400 (USD) total as plenty of copies are available for less.

Thanks 47greyfox, TriX and CHG. I looked at some of the posted links. I wasn't going to try taking the lens apart as shown in one of the videos. But another one suggested shifting the lens slightly back from where it clicks into place and that did allow it to work. Probably not a long-term solution though.

Check and tighten all the small screws on the mount end, if they are loose (even very slightly) it could hurt connection to the body.

OK, I'll check that today.
Thanks.

Look very carefully all around the mount, there are typically a few very tiny screws that are often not easily seen. Tighten (be careful not to strip) and a tiny dab of threadlocker, or nail polish will keep them secure, if that is the issue. If you looked at openiing it up (and have no experience with that) proceed very slowly and cautiously, watch carefully not to stress any moving parts, and esp. any ribbon cables. Check any you see (you can unlock them and pull and clean the contacts) make sure the clips on the connectors are securely locked in place when done. Be very thorough and gentle if you do decide to "go in"....do watch a couple of lens repair or cleaning videos, you will see the type of issues that can arise.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm definitely not going to fiddle around inside the lens - I know my limits! But I will have a look at those screws on the mount and see if they need tightening.

An alternative is to contact Rick Riggins at https://www.discountcamerarepair.com/ and see what he says.

You can try using a pencil eraser on the lens contacts. Then wipe with a disposable lens wipe.

will

Not a pencil eraser, contact cleaner applied sparingly. Erasers abrade the thin gold plating on the contacts and leave rubber residue behind.

A few years ago, I had my lens cable repaired. At that time Canon must have made a modification to it, since the lens barrel no longer just drops when facing down. Still a great lens.

Yes, mine drops when facing down. I put an elastic band round it when carrying it around.

This is why locks were added to all the Canon designs following the mark1 24-105L.
