Will be taking a trip to South Korea in October.
Thinking of taking but one camera, my FZ1000. 24-400mm (equiv)/f2.8-4
The other option is my Sony RX100 III. 24-70 (equiv)/f/1.8 (wide) / f/2.8 (tele) - f/11
Have ruled out the D700.

Am I thinking straight here?

Not sure what kind of shooting you plan on doing but the FZ 1000 is more than capable in most situations. The Sony may be more useful if you plan on shooting dark interiors.

Korea is not known for a place to shoot wildlife so the extra reach of the FZ 1000 is not needed. I have the RX100v and would take it. But .. If you have room and weight allowances, I would take both. Big advantage of the RX is that it will fit into any pocket.. Enjoy your trip.

I like traveling light, so I would bring the Sony. I also find wide angle more useful when I travel. To each his own.

My 17-50 2.8 or 18-135 3.5-5.6 usually will suffice if not entirely sure what awaits.

Take the 28-400 . It's one camera and one lens. I used that set up in Asia and Europe, works fine and travels light.

For me, the better zoom range of the FZ1000 is preferable to the wider aperture of the Sony. But the Sony is smaller, so it is a matter of what is important to you.

You've got a full month to learn your cameras' capabilities and which camera best suits the type of photography you are planning to do on the trip.

When you are familiar with your equipment, the answer as to what to take will come easily.

I believe in having some sort of backup when making a trip like this. Cameras can fail.

At least have a good P&S.,Extra batteries, cards, and a charger. Earlier this year my charger died
and I was out of luck despite having two of the same model of cameras and four batteries., once the batteries
were used. Part of my problem was I had failed fully charge all four batteries before going on my trip.

Good for you! You pick the best time of the year for weather & scenery. Either one will be good but why not both. You will be happy in some situations ie large structures, inside museums and some wild life . I have been to S Korea several times and you will be quiet safe and comfortable in public transportations & accommodations. Shang.
