Is there a firmware update for EF L lenses for use on an R5? Or is that a stupid question???

No firmware required for EF on R5. Just use the Canon adapter.

But, some lenses do have firmware updates. Check the Canon support site.

I have 3 EF L lenses. 100 MM 2.8 L macro.......24mm-70MM 2.8L II.....100-400L II. So are you saying I don't need to update any of them?? your answer was a little confusing. I do have the canon adapter with the control ring.

Some lenses have firmware updates; that can be determined from the Canon support site. The FW updates I am aware of relate to the IS system.

None of those FW updates are related to using the lenses on an R body with adapter.

I know the macro and 100-400 do not have a FW update.

You should have your firmware updated on your digital camera as a general best practice.

But, to use an EF / EF-S lens on an EOS mirrorless body, you only need an EF-RF adapter, a piece of physical equipment.

The camera is updated. I've already done it twice. I was curious if there needed to be one particularly with the 100-400 being used on the R5. I know that one does have firmware. Thanks for your help guys.

The support section for the 100-400L II has a firmware update, v1.07, you can download and install onto both DSLRs and MILC. The details are embedded in a PDF inside the ZIP that includes the firmware software.

Correct. It didn’t show up on my iPad when I checked the support site.
