Another shot from the internet. Apparently some photographers are more dedicated then others!

I'm not sure if "dedicated" is the proper term...?

For the price of his shoes and tripod...he could have bought a longer lens.

No, this was detailed in an article sometime after the shot. They used a liquid that burned off very fast as magicians use in their acts. It was set up, lit, and photographed and the flames burned off in a matter of seconds.

I was going to call BS but your explanation seems logical.

There's no way a guy could stand on hot lava with temps high enough to ignite his shoes and tripod. He couldn't even get close.

Thanks for the info. I never saw the article but I assumed that it wasn't quite what it seems. It was well done though. Notice that the tripod leg and the shoe closest to the hottest part of the lava are the ones that seem to be burning the most intensely. Someone paid attention to details!

Qualifies as fake in my book. You don't always need PS to create an illusion.

I think it would be safe to say that he didn't make it. Stupid is more the word. LOL

Many years ago I photographed on the lava dome of Mt St Helens where you could feel heat coming in through your boots and realizing time to change position. No flames though.
