DxO Pure Raw

My Fuji X100T 16MP starts to show noise at around ISO 800 and it's quite visible by ISO 1600.

DxO Pure Raw ($129 list) can help with the noise. It takes the 14-bit raw file and converts it into a 16-bit DNG that behaves like a raw file - you can recover shadow information in the same manner. It is actually demosaiced but you can still open it with RawDigger.

The noise reduction is obvious (DeepPRIME option):

It does a little sharpening along with the noise reduction.

Because of the extra two bits the DNG file is about 53mb instead of 37mb for the 14-bit file. For a Z7 raw file the difference is even greater, maybe 1.5-3x the size of the original raw file.

The white balance seems to be slightly cooler and greener than the original raw file As Shot or when set with the eyedropper but that may vary with different scenes. The WB was set here with the eyedropper. The original As Shot (Daylight WB) shows the same small difference.

It's not something you would want to use all of the time but it might rescue an occasional noisy low light situation.

Pure Raw does a great job, and sometimes I use it with Topaz Denoise AI on especially noisy images at high ISO.

Here's a test shot at ISO 10,000 taken as I was leaving after shooting some sunsets.

Here is another example with the Df at ISO 128000.

Pure Raw does some sharpening. In this case it looked like a little too much so I back it down.

Speaking of Z7, here is the same test at IS) 128000. This time I did not need to back off on the sharpening.

In this case the NEF was about 69mb, the DNG about 182mb. I don't ant to do this very often. I'll probably not keep the DNG since it can be rebuilt later.

Although noise reduction is the most visible benefit, that is not as easy to see at low ISO.

But at low ISO the increase in sharpness is more obvious.
