I bought the panasonic lumix for a compact camera for an african safari. Total dud. Within i few days it is giving me error messages, turn off and on again....zoom will not close. Anyone else with these troubles? Terrible cannot wait to get home and return it. Help...
I bought along my sony rx 100 and it has never failed me. Any ideas?..

Do you have a spare battery to try? If not, can you use some alcohol to clean the battery contacts? Maybe a Q-tip dipped in alcohol to clean the contacts in the battery compartment?
It sounds like power problems to me.
Good that you have a backup camera!

Sorry to hear it. Thank heavens you had the Sony. My ZS80 has been a trouper, no problems.

I guess you meant ZS80, not FZ80. Never heard of a SZ80.

Sorry to hear of your problem, Carolyn. I have a couple of those ZS cameras and they have always performed admirably. Hopefully you bought it new and still have some warranty available on it??

I had that very problem with a used Nikon pocket camera I bought several years ago. Most likely the previous owner dropped the camera, damaging the lens retracting mechanism, which then causes the camera to periodically freeze up, show error message and shut down.

Not sure if this is helpful but I had something similar on a LUMIX lx100. Took it on a trip to Morocco somehow, and I was careful, sand got into the zoom mechanism when we were in the desert. This caused the camera to zoom only part way and when it got to 50mm I received the same error message you are referring to. I sent it Panasonic service and they wanted more to fix It than it was worth. Not sure this is what’s causing your problem but your error message rang a bell.

Genein Chi,
I think you are right. Severe dust here for days. Thank you. Carolyn

Good luck in returning a camera that you have had for 6 weeks. I think most places have a 30 day or less policy..

I have an RX100 VII But the lens is 24-200.

I have been on African Safaris and found that many times I needed a longer lens.

So I rented the SONY RX10 IV. with is 24-600 lens.
Far superior for a Safari!!.

Others on this site have said the same about the RX10 IV.
A super camera just made for this kind of Adventure!

The best to you on the Safari.

I have had 2 of these cameras. I bought for the lens quality. First one failed for reasons you mentioned. I foolishly bought a second and it has failed me for the same reason. A camera repair store told me that replacement parts are not available.
I think the camera is a dud also. Money down the drain.

Google suggestion - place camera with lens inserted into vacuum hose then turn it on with the vacuum running. This fixed my wifes little Lumix which had the same problem BUT..... dust got onto sensor which could not be removed and spoiled every shot. Cheers JohnR

I have a ZS-100 which I absolutely got wet, as in “soaked.” Panasonic’s factory repair service was awful. They said they could not repair the camera; they said they couldn’t replicate the problem. So, I sent it to Royal Camera Repair in Hanover, Illinois. They replied swiftly with what the camera required, I approved the work, and they replaced the zoom motor for the lens, and that camera has worked flawlessly ever since. Price was reasonable.

I would send the camera to Royal Camera Repair if you’d like to retain your camera. I think they worked quickly and well.
