With the hundreds of cameras on the floor of the Jan. 6 hearing last night, I noticed a photographer using a 4x5 (maybe smaller) Speed Graphic camera on the floor of the session. Pulling slides, flipping them over and switching film holders. Took me back to my very early years ago. I loved the quality of the large negative. You had to know how to quickly set the f-stop and shutter speed. There was some latitude in the darkroom, but so much better when you were "spot on!" It was refreshing to see the old school photographer (wearing a sport coat and tie!) working to get maybe 8 shots in the allotted time while the others (very casually dressed) we’re getting hundreds or more images. (He probably had Dektol stains on his fingers as well!)

With the hundreds of cameras on the floor of the J... (show quote)

I don't remember the cameras as much as the testimony of the witness.

I'm amazed that somebody actually watched the made-for-tv presentation.

I watched the hearing last night along with over Twenty million concerned, interested viewers, not including those who streamed it—but I didn’t see the photographer with a 4 by 5.

There was definitely someone using a 4x5 at one of the previous hearings. I saw it. But here is the thing I don't understand. I used a Crown Graphic "for fun" when I was in high school and college. With a 135mm f/4.7 lens, it was impossible to get decent handheld shots indoors without a flash. I used a 250 watt-second potato masher style flash that I would bounce plus add some fill with a piece of white paper taped to it. What magic elixir (or film) is this person using? Could this person be using a digital back?

It is likely David Burnett, a photojournalist who has captured many Capitol Hill hearings with his Pacemaker Speed Graphic.

I believe he had a monopod.

I worked for a studio in the 60s. We used 4x5s to shoot weddings! I took 2 cases of 24 film cartridges each to shoot the wedding. 96 shots. P

A shameful waste of film.

But it will likely be his images of the event which will be the most sought after, not the thousands of digital images captured by the other photographers.

I can't imagine any of the images will be significantly sought after. How many will you be getting to hang on your walls?

The photographer's name in Frank Thorpe. I believe he works for NBC. (You can see his work on Instagram.) His work is beautiful. By the way there is at least one other photographer there shooting film. I don't know his name but it looks like he's shooting with a Mamiya 7. You can see him changing rolls frequently.

Read quick, this thread will be deleted by the admins!

Politics are STRICTLY verbotten here. (Ask me how I know... I got dinged for a very vague political reference recently.)
