There is a story, don't know if true, that the first to climb it couldn't get down and were rescued by helicopter. It was the reason given for forbidding climbing the first time I was there in the late forties or early fifties.

Definitely not true. It was climbed by army scouts in 1874 for the first time in written documentation. Indian legend claims it has been climbed for centuries as a sacred spiritual quest.
However helecopter rescues ate a regular occurance still today. Usually once or twice a year.
