Recently I took a three-week vacation and drove from home in PA to Memphis, across to St. Joseph TN, to Charleston SC. After a week in Charleston drove back to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Cherokee, NC, and back to PA that way. This trip put a little over 4000 miles on the car. While I saw some nice waterfalls and scenery, the time in the car took away from the time I could shoot. I think in the future I will narrow my destinations down a bit and spend more quality time in a smaller geographical area.

That’s life. Trade offs and compromises.

It depends in the desired destination doesn't it as well as the desires along the way. Driving time is a necessity for some destinations.
It takes us about 12 hours to get to Acadia National Park.
Lots of stuff to see along the way. I'm sure we could stop every hour(+/-) at some places to shoot, but we don't.

There's a saying that goes, "Take time to stop and smell the roses". I believe there is some wisdom to that.

I use to be guilty of the same. As I got older I realized I was missing more than I was seeing so I changed that tactic to staying longer in just a couple of places.

Before covid Sharon and I would take day trips with one destination on the list, but we would stop or take a side trip if something looked/sounded interesting, sometimes getting home late at night but usually before dark.
We had a blast !!! very relaxing drives most of the time.

We're leaving Friday for my wife's family reunion at a ski resort in West Virginia. We'll take several side trips on the way back next week. We're hoping to take in some blue grass music.

Years and years ago, before photography, I took vacations with a completely mapped out schedule. Later, and with photography, I found that it was better to have a general plan as to where and what, but if i wanted more time at a specific location, I just took the time. That way, the sun was not necessarily in the wrong position, or if I found more to picture, it was available. A side, but important, benefit - the trip was much less hectic!

4000 miles, wow! Did you have to take out a bank loan for purchasing gas?

My wife wasn’t too happy with me! She and my grandson flew down to Charleston — 200$ round trip. I spent 659.00 on gas plus another 700.00 on motels. Of coarse I was gone for 19 days and they only had a week.

12 days. I picked them up in Myrtle Beach after my first night in Charleston and took them back to the Myrtle airport a week later. There are no direct flights from Allentown to Charleston but Spirit Airlines flies direct to Myrtle. Their prices are better than taking one of the large airliners to Charleston and it also avoids a layover and plane change in Charlotte or Atlanta.

Last month I made a 3-weeks, 4000 miles trip from Quebec City to our Maritime provinces - New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island. I brought home near thousand images, but certainly I could have used a few more days in several locations, like 3 National parks that we visited. There is never enough time for photography, unless you go to specific location to shoot for the National Geographic as a staff photog 😊

We’ve done a few monumental trips that I really treasure but there could always be more time in certain locales. E.g., 5000 miles from Tucson thru Yellowstone to Glacier, over to Portland, down the coast thru Redwoods to So Cal (Salton Sea) and back to Tucson. Also, Paris to Brittany, down the coast of France, diagonally across Spain skirting Madrid (been there) to the Costa del Sol and along the Spanish coast past Barcelona (been there) to Dijon, then back to Paris. Didn’t keep track of the miles, I mean kilometers.
