Was wondering if anyone has used a Nikon 18-105mm at-s lens w/vr on a d5500 camera. I have a couple of d7xxx cameras with good range zooms; but the d5500 is lighter for a easy street carry camera. I had a 18-55 lens but it is no longer functional so thought I could replace it with a 18-105 to keep the weight down when I don’t want to carry my heavier cameras & lenses. Thoughts please.

I have used this lens on a D5200 with excellent results. Carrired this combo to Europe several times.

Seems like a decent performer with a nice focal range.
I tried one quite a while ago and was pleasantly surprised.
It's light weight (14.8 oz./420g) is partly due to the plastic lens mount.
I've seen two of these with broken mounts- from operators dropping the camera.
One thought: the break-away lens mount may have saved the camera from damage.
(There are youtube videos on how to replace with metal mounts.)

For a little more $ and 3.5 oz more weight , you could get a little extra range with the 18-140 which has a metal lens mount. KEH used prices HERE. $180-$190

AF-S 18-105..... It's a great little "all arounder", you will be happy with it. It's bigger bro the 18-140 is another great choice.....I think they are (overall) both better than the 18-55. For light and sharp look at the AF-P lenses as well......they seem a bit sharper (to my eyes), but all will serve you well.

Here's another image which I found which shows very good sharpness (shot with a tripod). Image taken from the roof self-parking lot of Harrah's Marina Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Quite a few miles away from a view of the the Atlantic Ocean shown.

I have the 18-105 which I used on my D60, and now use on a D5500 and D5600. I love this lens. I bought it in 2009, and it has stayed on one camera or another ever since, other than when I needed the reach of a telephoto lens. I am really happy with the photographs I took with it.

I recently bought one of the 18-140 lenses, mainly because I got a really good deal at MPB.com. Again, a great lens. I have done side-by-side comparisons and I cannot see any difference in the quality of the photographs. The 18-140 does have the metal mount, and slightly longer reach for a slightly greater weight.

I think either lens is a great choice with the D5x00 cameras. The only thing I would watch for is that some of the 18-140s are made in China. Others, and the 18-105, are made in Thailand. Probably no difference in quality but I personally will not buy or use Chinese made lenses.

I have also done comparisons with the 18-55 DX VR AF-S, 18-55 DX VR II AF-S, and 18-55 DX VR AF-P. The only one I can pick out as not quite as good using side-by-side comparisons is the AF-P. Mainly because of color fringing in the corners, but definitely not quite as sharp. I have two of the AF-Ps and two of the older 18-55 DX VR II AF-S lenses, and both the newer AF-Ps seem to suffer from being designed to be inexpensive rather than excellent.

Thanks for all the responses. Leaning towards the 18-140mm. Think I will order from KEH unless a UHH’er has one for sale at a good price.

If I absolutely had to choose between the two, I would opt for the 18-140. However, I have no plans to sell either one of them.

MPB.com has a couple of 18-140s in Excellent condition for $140. Unfortunately their photos do not show country of origin.

I also have the 18-140. Depending on your skills, I doubt you'll see a difference. Two, inexpensive kit lenses which are a great value.
