Hello fellow members,

I had previously posted seeking comments/advise on Nikon Z 611 camera; in addition, I am also looking at Nikon

D780 Camera. Could members offered their opinion on the D780. I am hoping to go on a cruise in January.

Thanks in advance.

I went from a d750 to a z6ii. The z 6 is a good camera, people complain about auto focus, my have not had any issues, I do not shot sports or birds, I do commercial products for the most part, I like the camera size and weight esp. With the z lenses. The in body stabilization it tremendous the other day I shot a flag wavin in the wind with the daylight 1/2 moon in The sky. F22. 1/25sec shutter speed and the photo is tack sharp and it shows the motion of the flag. And it was hand held. I could have never got that shot with my d750 or d610 handheld. If you have time rent both cameras for a week and try them out, I rent from lensprotogo.com I always rent before I buy.

What are you currently using? What full frame Nikon lenses do you own, if any? If you are looking to build a system with new lenses from scratch, it doesn't make sense to buy a DSLR like the D780. The Z lenses are said to be better than their older F mount counterparts. You can use some of the F mount lenses on the Z cameras with the FTZ adaptor, but some of the older ones will not autofocus. They need a motor in the camera body for that.

Having said that, the D780 is a fine camera and can even take fine video so long as you're willing to use the screen on the back of the camera, which can be awkward if you're hand holding the camera. The EVF of the Z6ii allows you to take video with the camera up to your eye. Another advantage of the Z6ii is that it is smaller and lighter than the D780.

In terms of IQ, you won't see any difference. The two cameras use the same sensor. The down side of the Z cameras is battery life, and that has to do with the EVF sucking up juice. Don't travel without an extra battery or two if you buy one.

Can you walk into a camera store and hold both in your hands and see if that helps you decide?

PS. I now see the post ahead of mine. The in-body stabilization is an advantage of the Z6ii.

Lens technology improvements (speed and accuracy) both now and in the future are going to happen with the Z mount. This should factor into your decisions.

The Z6II is essentially an update of the D780. Spec wise pretty similar with all the advantages of mirrorless.

I agree with others on the lens being the long time difference. I purchased the D780 because I have several F mount lens and I personally don't plan to purchase all new lens. I am totally happy with the D780 and do not in any way regret my choice. Your long term photography needs should be considered.

I HAD a Z6 II for a couple of weeks, never liked its feel nor did I like having to use that FTZ adapter with my F mount lenses. In fact, never charged its battery to turn it on, I was that uncomfortable with its physicals. Returned it to B&H and got a D780 instead. Besides, did not want to have to invest money I did not have in "Z" mount lenses. Took the D780 to the Left Coast after Labor Day last September; the D780 does what I want it to do. My opinion. I have and use a D7100 and a D850 as well, and am comfortable with the menus of those DSLRs.

The comparison by therwol is spot on, however you are comparing apples to oranges. It's your decision about working with the glass you have or to buy a new stable of lenses if you go with ILMC. Maybe there is a GAS attack waiting for you in the future. What ever you decide, have a good trip and enjoy shooting.

Who told you that you have to buy all new lenses?

Nikon is a bit more difficult than other brands, but the FTZ adapter (literally F-mount To Z-mount) enables all of Nikon's newer F-mount lenses for light metering, aperture control, VR, and auto-focus on a Z-mount body. The new mirrorless specific lenses are superior, but the legacy lenses operate just as well where the FTZ adapter supports the specific lens model.

Also, the general term is MILC, as in the ordering of terms: Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera.

I tried to like the mirror-less system. They just felt too awkward and clumsy to me. Especially after attaching a decent sized lens. However, I'm loving my D780. Feels great in the hand, same sensor as the Z6ii, and the images look great. Even the JPEG's straight out of the camera. And 2260 images from one battery charge is nice too. I added an accessory grip to mine, enabling approximately double that many exposures.

I moved from a D780 to a Z6ii but still love the 780 and use it in some situations. I have absolutely no qualms about using it. It is a little larger than the Z but not too big that size is a problem. Its IQ is great, autofocus is fast, frame rate is comparable in most situations. Noise in high iISO instances is comparable. You will like it.

What are talking about, didn’t even charge the battery? It sounds like you were talking about the FTZ, which has no battery and makes no sense. If you’re talking about the camera battery how did you evaluate a camera for two weeks?
