A couple weeks ago, I posted a request for some input on the Sigma 70-300 APO lens. I got some interesting and helpful comments and finally bought one. I took it out yesterday and gave it a very quick and abbreviated field test. So far I am pleased with it. Got it used for $125 + shipping.

Well, back to the lens I bought. I am pretty happy with it for the money I spent, $125 + shipping. It is the older Sigma lens without the image stabilization and the internal focus motor, but with the apo glass.
I am attaching a couple 'junk shots' I did with the lens mounted on a D90. These were just quick shots I did around my house to see what the lens could do. The shot with the bee and the flower was hard to nail. The bee was very active and the macro mode on the lens is like all other macro exercises. You really need to use a tripod or some other support for the rig. Not as sharp as I would like, but I think the culprit is camera motion.
The shot of the apartment window I shot with the camera on a stick and leaned up against a post on my front porch and zoomed out to the full 300mm. The building is across the street from my house. Pretty sharp, I must say, but without some support under the rig, I don't think it would have been.
I used to think I could hand-hold at slow speeds or long focal lengths and get sharp results, and probably could......30 yrs ago. The golden years?!!! Nope! More like tarnished brass. I mean, I like the little bit of wisdom I have accumulated over the years, but, overall, getting old sucks an egg.
