Beware UPS

We shipped two large suitcases from FL to Colorado. One made it all the way in three days. The other made it to Jacksonville and disappeared. Unfortunately the UPS store we shipped from played down the need for additional insurance. So UPS is only paying $100 and the cost of the shipping. We lost much more and are submitting claims to homeowners insurance and credit card company, both of which said we had to file report with police for theft. We’ll see what happens, but we learned an expensive lesson: get the additional insurance!

Several years ago UPS lost a camera that I sent to my son. I live in McAllen TX he lives in Chesapeake Bay Va. Consequently I don't trust UPS, FEDX or any of the rest of them with my stuff. I always insure it twice what it's worth. Strange they haven't lost a package since I started doing that.

Knock on wood!!! I have never had an issue with the local UPS store or the drivers for my neighborhood. I do insure anything I send but I think tramsey has a good idea about over-insuring.

Gee, it sounded as though this was a discussion regarding the purchase of extended warranties!

Whatever works for you and helps you to feel comfortable.

This week I was a winner on eBay of a rare, one of a kind and historical item. The seller is shipping it Fed Ex and I am getting a ulcer waiting to see if it can be delivered in tact with the packaging not destroyed. Tracking says it is supposed to be here today.

That's tough. I'm surprised he talked you out of insurance. That's like an extended warranty - pure profit.

There may yet be hope for your suitcase. I sent a camera to Nikon for repair and it was logged onto the UPS truck at Nikon's loading dock coming back but was never logged in again. I called UPS and they did everything to put me off including telling me that I had to wait 30 days before they would start to investigate, which seemed absolutely ridiculous. After days of calls and no answers it suddenly showed up without any warning about a week late on my doorstep in perfect shape. So you might yet get a surprise.
Another idea is that, like everywhere in this modern world, UPS probably has CCTV in all their facilities and if someone walked off with it there they might have video. It should be easy to spot a suitcase in their sea of brown boxes.
I wish you luck!

What kind of time frame is involved? I would request to see the outbound shipping log for the day you dropped off your suitcases. I agree with the responder who questioned why they would discourage additional insurance. It would be interesting to see if the lost suitcase ever left the place where you dropped it off.

No longer using UPS since their decision to be political and anti-2nd Amendment.

Noticed you were from McAllen. I grew up there & graduated from McHi; the population at the time I left in 1966 was 32,000. Understand the population has quintupled since then. Have not been back since 1984, so probably wouldn’t recognize the city. Good place to grow up in the 50’s. Was wondering if we might have been in school at the same time.

Or, you might consider shipping with the postal service. Remember that if it is stolen (not a great possibility) you have a postal inspector and no need for local police, the long arm of the Federal investigation is much more powerful. Also, I found the USPS to be often cheaper than other carriers and out of the US much better. Many forget about using the USPS but it really is more reliable, cheaper and better than the rest of these guys.

USPS may be reliable where you live but not here. On many occasions packages are not delivered on the due date even though the informed mail says it's out for delivery. It may show up the next day or the day after. Even our regular mail may not be delivered or may not arrive until after 9pm. On top of that you have people following mail trucks on their routes and stealing mail from mailboxes. My neighbor and I let each other know when we hear the mail truck and we will retrieve the other's mail if one of us isn't home.

UPS and FedEx are much more reliable in this area.

I can only hope it shows up but it’s been missing for almost 6 weeks.

I am still awaiting my vitamin supplement I ordered three years ago on Ebay. They were shipped and tracked USPS. Shipment arrived at my local post office and then dropped off the face of the earth. I printed out the tracking materials and went to the local post office. The clerk at the desk told me I had come back and talk to the post master, who only came in mornings a couple of days a week. When I finally talked to the post master (who spoke very bad, broken English, with a heavy accent), she said that my package was sent to the next destination. But, I told her, this was the final destination. To which she told me that the package went to the next destination. I asked where the next destination was and why wasn't it on my tracking record. She again told me that the package was on the way to its next destination; she still had no idea where that destination was and why they didn't put it out for delivery as my town should have been the final destination. I still have not received my package, but the Ebay vendor sent another order which I received in three days.

The thieves do not touch insured packages because it is to easy to do the tracing and who handled it.
