I need a new SSD backup for my Mac Studio max. My old WD my passport couldn't stand the stress I guess.

Any suggestions? I'm not shooting with a Canon R5.

I use Samsung SSDs for my C drives. For an external, if you need something small, an M.2 with an enclosure is the way to go. Low prices with loads of storage.

If you go with a SSD enclosure... Make sure they match other. You have at least two type of connectors for the SSD drive.

The camera you use has no bearing with the storage.

For info, I used a regular SD card... they now come in the 1 TB range. I keep one in my wallet when traveling.

There is even a Micro-SD card for $135.00!!! While this not intended for backup there is no reason why one should not use it this way.

1 TB drive will work as the backup software compresses the drive data quite well. It really depends on your setup.

Now I would go for 1 TB drives, simply to alternate the backups or possibly keep one in a different location, just in case.

There are three popular SSD drives Sandisk, Samsung, and Crucial that go on sale frequently. I bought a Crucial X8 1TB for about $105 - 2TB are around $180. Sandisks are a bit higher, and Samsung somewhere in between.

The Crucial is working great for me and customer service is terrific, unlike Samsung whom I am personally boycotting because of their terrible customer service.

I use one as a backup on my desktop and another as a portable drive for all my pictures when I'm using my laptop.

Highly recommend.

Don't worry. Samsung is definitely OUT. Thanks for the advice.

Check otherworldcomputing.com. They have a series of Ssds with a footprint to match your Mac studio so you can stack them if you wish.

Costco has a Sandisk 1 TB SSD drive for $120.
Yes, you should get an SSD card as large or larger then you computer drive.

If it is just for backup, do you really need an SSD? I'm using a conventional 4 TB portable SanDisk G-Drive ($140) as my Time Machine backup drive. It is decently quick, but does not have to be a speed demon for my backup purposes. It just has to go on the road with me and my MacBook Air.

I use Samsung 2 TB model T7 USB 3.2 Gen 2 SSDs (about $105/Terabyte) for working storage because they are tiny, reasonably fast (up to 1050 MB/sec), decently priced, and great for the road. When I feel the need for speed, I'll get something like the SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD - Up to 2000MB/s - USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 drive.

In the office, I rely on two enterprise class conventional 16TB drives for long term file storage. OWC has them.

If you are looking for very fast professional Thunderbolt 4 devices, OWC at https://eshop.macsales.com is a go-to vendor for all things Mac. They are not cheap, but if you have a high volume, high speed operation, they're an excellent choice.

I read a couple of reviews that were bad news for SanDisk. Bad customer service apparently.

The easiest way to solve your problem is to call OWC and discuss it with them. You have a fast machine, with Thunderbolt 4 and you should have a compatible drive. OWC is reliable and offers great solutions. Expect to pay for good gear. I use both an 2TB envoy pro AND an 8 TB Mercury Pro U 2 on my existing iMac PRO. They are both TB3, and will transition nicely to my Mac Studio Ultra I expect in 2 weeks. I also use Synology NAS servers for storage. If you want more specific information, PM me you contact info and I can call you if you wish. Best of luck.

I don't understand why the drive size needs to match. :)
