Can you tell me what camera does the best shots underwater and is the most reliable camera for not leaking and for shock? I'm looking for a camera that will give me great shots on a river, in and out of the water and can handle the quality for the action shots as well. There are a lot out there and I'm new at this. I appreciate your input and knew your answers would help me. Thank you so much.

the best is going to be a nikonos v but it is also expensive. its waterproof to a depth of around 160 feet but unless you are looking to dive with it get a good point and shoot and a case.
Go Pro is cheap and waterproof and does still and videos too. your choices are endless but stick with a good name brand. if you are talking dslr then the cost of a housing can go up into the thousands.

The Nikonos V is a FILM camera. If you are looking for digital images, forget that one.
Some digitals are the Nikon AW100 good to 33', the Olympus TG-1 good to 40', and the Canon Powershot D20 also good to 33'. The Nikon has a $70 off sale going on right now which makes it by far the least expensive of the three. There are others too, but quality is seriously lacking in many of them.

Of the 3: Nikon AW100, the Olympus TG-1, and the Canon Powershot D20 do you know which one is more reliable and can shoot the best quality photos and video? Or is there a better one on the market than these 3? Thank you for your response which is greatly appreciated.

I have never used any of them personally, but I looked at them this Spring when I was planning a trip to the coast. I was ready to but the Nikon AW100 but finally decoded I just really didn't need one that badly.

I took classes from an underwater master B.D. (before digital) and the Nikonos V was pretty much the only game in town. It was if the other manufacturers didn't even try. But that was film. A lot depends on the clarity of the water. River water is sometimes not very clear depending on the time of the year and the sediment in the water. With our recents rains, here in Oregon, most of the rivers are looking a little brown.

Take a look at the Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS. It has great waterprooof specs, very good reviews, and has a reasonable price tag.

I use the Olympus Tough series, mine is an 8500, It is waterproof down to 30 feet, shock resistant if dropped on concrete from 6' and works at 14 degrees above zero. I use it whenever I am kayaking or boating and at the beach, 12 megapixels and a great little camera that takes decent video too.

How waterproof? Canon makes a point and shoot that's waterproof to 30 ft I think, considered it as a camera for my wife at one time, Bob.

Check put the Panasonics also. Highly rated. One problem with the point and shoots is being able to see the screen underwater.

I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix-DMC water-shock-dust, freeze-proof pocket camera, and was pleasantly surprised that the quality has been at least equal to my Nikon P-90.
