Is there an affordable (under $500) macro lens for the NEX-7? It sounds like the sony version is not that great. I am open to any brand as long as the coverters tranfer the auto functions as well.
I think you can use the Sony alpha lenses on NEX. Look at the Sony macro lenses at 30mm and 100mm. I have both these lenses and they are great.

chaphohn is correct that the a-mount lenses can be used on the NEX - with an inexpensive adapter. However, the inexpensive adapters do not communicate with the camera body so you lose AF and AE, though you can adjust aperture to some extent. You would need to get the new Sony adapter that maintains all auto functions, but it runs a couple hundred bucks. But is it worth it? Macro photography should usually be done in manual focus anyway.
An advantage of the NEX is focus peaking in manual focus mode so manual focusing is very easy.
And the Sony 100mm macro lens is outstanding. Or for a less expensive option, you might try to find a Minolta version on eBay.
