Lens Question Sigma or Tamron for 60d

I've been asked what I want as a birthday gift of course if the wife's budget allowed I would ask for Canon L glass possibly something like Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L. Not in her budget. With that said I'm considering an all round lens. I enjoy shooting outdoors, inanimate I avoid people shots. At one time I had been considering a Tamron 180-270 mm 3.5-6.3 Di II VC. Recently I have seen a side by side comparison of the Sigma 18-250 mm 3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM.

Suggestions out of the 2 ? I'm open to other suggestions in the $600 or thereabouts price range :?:

Thanks

What lenses have you got now? How much overlap in focal lenths would these lenses cause?
Ever consider a good macro?

I'm shooting with a Canon 60d, have the 50 mm 1.8 and have the 18-135 mm kit lens that came with the 60d. So there is some overlap. I've never really given much thought to a good macro. I know you're one of the knowledgeable members here from what I've read of your posts. What macro lens would you suggest and why?

Thanks.

With that body you could effectively use anything from around 60mm to 150mm in a true macro lens. I might recommend taking a look at the Sigma 105mm F2.8 as a good focal length, it will get you wonderful TRUE macro images at a reasonable working distance from your subject. And at close to your price point. It currently has a $200 rebate which makes this nice lens only $769.00.

Steveo52, always a nice dilemma to have......I recently swapped a Canon 18-135mm Kit lens due to focus issues (check out focus issue on UHH) - I went for a Sigma 18-125mm.....very happy and a great outdoor lens and compliments other fixed lens.....would certainly recommend the Sigma!

Sigma 18-250 mm 3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM.

Even though I have other lenses that can cover all this focal range, I get this lens for an every day most purposes lens. It is wide enough and long enough for most things. You can get closer than you first think to get an image with this lens. Having this lens allows you to not be changing lens all the time in the field.

Buy good glass to start with. You will be disappointed if you think about saving money rather than purchasing quality glass. Find out what the budget is, and look for used glass if you have to. There are a lot of 24-70mm Canon lenses out there for sale since the newer model II has been released. Id rather have a use Canon f2.8 lens than a variable aperture Sigma or Tamron hunk of junk.

I use the Tamron one on my 60D I didn't have the sigma one available to try one I went to the camera store here. I'm satisfied with it. I don't normally use auto-focus cause I like doing it manually but its auto-focus is faster than my canon 50mm 1.8/f ii lens. If you do a search for the Tamron 18-270 lens you wanted you'll find a lot of other responses about this lens as well as some sample pictures by others on here.

Yikes, now I'm more confused. I know the bottom line is I'll have to go to Hunt's Camera, that's 7 mile drive from my home and try a few lenses.

I think Jeep Daddy makes sense "buy good glass". Yea from what I've read hear at UHH that is a bit of a "mantra", finding the right used glass at the right price is probably best?

All of my glass is pre-owned. I even did some horse trading to go from my EF 100mm macro to Canons EF 100mm macro with IS. I got my 10-22, 24-70, 70-200, 100-400, and my 500mm f4 all pre-owned. I've only had one repaired after 2 years of use - the 100-400 barrel started to creep so the tension ring needed to be replaced. Very normal for this lens with as much use as it's had. I had two kit lenses that were new but I sold one before I ever mounted it on my camera and sold the other with the same kit it came in when I stepped up to another body.
