Yellowstone floods reaching far downstream

The flooding in Yellowstone Park is all flowing down the Yellowstone river, headed to the Missouri river, Mississippi river, and the Gulf of Mexico.
Current level near my home at Billings, MT is 16 feet. Record flood level here was 15 feet. NWS has designated this as a 500 year flood event. The water treatment plant water intake has been damaged and shut down leaving over 100,000 people with about one days water supply. Stores are selling out of bottled water as fast as toilet paper 2 years ago.
This event may be done on YNP, but its just beginning for those downstream.

Wow..I have family in Miles City just downstream. I remember seeing the ice flows cause flooding but this is all water. Stay safe!

Well, you have no shortage of water itself. If you don't have one get one of those emergency filter systems and purification chemical sets before the hardware and sporting goods store are sold out. Boil, treat, and filter like crazy for cooking and drinking. For several months in Vietnam, my unit's camp used water from a mountain stream for our showers - and yes it was COLD, esp in relation to the air temperature. Then the camp got a large heating and basic filter unit for the shower water. The signs still said DON'T DRINK IT!

Typically these events inundate the storm and sanitary sewer systems as well as the potable water system. So the flood waters themselves are hazardous and any contact should be avoided if possible.

If your property is not directly impacted this shows one reason a year's supply of food and storage of lots of water is important.
I look at our pool as our emergency water source.
I take it you are safe from the floods and that is good.

The flooding has passed us now, and is headed downstream. Lots more damages to come from this event.
