This is a 10X magnified focus-stacked view of the green bottle fly's calypters which are located under the forward portion of the wing where it joins the body. Flies that possess calypters use them to cover the 'halteres' which is the little "paddle-like wing" that aids the fly in maintaining stability in their flight. A crane fly is an example of one that does not possess calypters which makes their halteres visible when they are at rest.

Neat.

Never knew that fly wings were spiky.

Nice pics. Scary looking, makes me grateful those are not the size of cows.

Thanks, Longshadow. We can see things under a microscope lens that we cannot see any other way. The clear part of the fly's wing is covered with small hairs. They look smooth to the eye yet they are pretty whiskey.

Thanks, Wallen. Life would be pretty exciting if they were. There was a time when dragonflies were over three feet in size. Thankfully, those days, and many of those creatures, are long gone.

Thanks, UTMike. I see my share of flies every day. It's not until I look at them in magnified ways that I have a better understanding of how they are the way that they are....and that I want to kill them!
