I bought a Vivitar Creator 18" ring light at WalMart yesterday, and I'm not sure if I just got a bad one or if the whole concept is flawed.
The light color works well, but the light brightness seems really inconsistent. It goes up and down at random, and how you turn the knob doesn't seem to have a direct impact on brightness.
I haven't tried the remote yet, maybe it does a better job controlling brightness?
Followup: The brightness seems to work much better using the remote.
I bought my ring light for intra oral dental photos from Lester dine. Professional medical flash. Works great
I did get a replacement from WalMart and the new one seems to be fine. (In addition to the lights not staying constant, it had a small piece of plastic broken off on the cell phone mount.)

The Lester Dine (Kiron 105 f/2.8) is a fantastic macro lens. 👍
I stand corrected, the light itself appears to work OK but the tripod is defective. And since it doesn't use a standard mounting bracket, I can't just attach the ring light to another tripod.
So my second impression is not much better than my first impression. Has Vivitar gone that far downhill as a company?

Did you somehow get the idea the OP is a dentist?

I used a Tamron 90 macro with that ring light

No but I am a dentist and used photos to send to lab for cosmetic dentistry.
It's a medical grade high end ring light

And how is that a recommendation to the OP who is asking about a $45 ring light?
The 45 dollar ring light wasn't working for him so I was recommending a pro grade dependable ring light.
Do you come here to start fighs about nothing?
Hey, I'm OK with a recommendation for higher end equipment, if the 2nd one had a better mount point, I'd probably keep it and use it with another tripod. The first one had a tripod that seemed OK but a bad light, the 2nd one has a light that seems OK but a bad tripod. :sigh:
I think I'll call Vivitar support tomorrow and see what they have to say before I return the second one to WalMart.

Sadly yes. Vivitar is not the Vivitar that we knew decades ago. Sakal purchased them quite awhile ago. They do not put out the quality products that they once did. 🥲

That is correct. Lester Dine did use the Tamron or Sigma macro lenses in the later models.
Well, I had an adapter that allows me to attach the ring light to a standard 1/4 mount tripod, so I think I'll keep the second one, but I may still contact Vivitar to complain about the defective tripod. At least the light seems to work well on this one. There are a lot of ring lights in the under-$100 class, not sure any of them are much better than this one.
