New to U. H.
I've been following & reading Ugly Hedgehog for the pass several weeks, found a number of answers to my delight, regarding iso, f stops etc. My first ever question is, I'll be travelling to Australia, & New Zealand for six weeks, what size media card would one suggest I would use? My camera has a 32gb capacity, or should take several smaller capacity cards, like three 8gb cards? Any suggestions?
One thougth on it is to take more than one SD card. Reason: If something happens to the one and only card, you lose all your pictures, if you have the shots on more than one, your loss is less.
Also while shooting you can change cards, so as to have split the amount of pictures of the subject between the two (or more cards). Of course this is sometimes a hassle, but it is an option.

Just a point of interest, if you get the opportunity have a look around the Coromandel peninsular N/I NZ. Up the top as you leave the Thames coast heading towards Coromandel. Every corner is a new view. What type of beach do you like? There is one there to suit your passion. Try digging a hole on Hot Water beach, sit in the hot water while watching the waves come in. A mind melting experience. Above all keep the camera loaded and ready. You are about to visit two wonderful countries. I hope you enjoy your time both ways.

Welcome to the forum. Your trip sounds exciting. Take several small cards. If one card is bad, you will have more without running all over trying to find a new one. You never know when you might get a bad one. Hope you love this site as much as we do!

Myself I would use the smaller ones then if one messes up or you lose one for some reason you haven't put everything on one card. Welcome :-)

Welcome canuck!! You will love it here. Good folks and good times with lots of help as you can see.:)
Use small cards, you will not loss the whole trip if it fails. And if you are taking a lap top with you, down load every night. Save the big card for movies. Have a wonderful time on your trip. Let us know how you are doing and post a few pictures if you can.:)

I would suggest several small cards too. Not that I worry about a bad card but I like to have my trip organized and having multiple cards helps me keep my time line correct. downloading into content specific folders later is easier too.
Welcome to UHH

Will you be shooting raw? Will you be downloading to a laptop or computer? That will affect the size and number of cards you'll want. If you're shooting raw, not downloading and staying for 6 weeks you're going to need a lot more than three 8 gb cards. You'd be surprised how fast cards can fill up and I would suggest multiple 16 gb or 32 gb cards for that length of time.
Thanks for sharing that exciting experience, we have plans to spent a few days on Coromandel Peninsula. Do you have any other attractions to suggest? We will be travelling N.Z. by car for three weeks.
Thanks Horseart, it makes perfecr sense.
I think this is a case of eggs and baskets. Multiple cards is best. I have 4 cards two are 4gig two are 8 gig.
And welcome. I have learned a lot on this site. Mostly about cameras and photography.
Thanks Cannonfire for your response, no I'll be shooting in jpeg, I just bought Samsung Galaxy tablet, can I download my pics on this tablet? I think I can, still trying to learn my way through the tablet. I also have a flash stick 4GH, I know I'll have to purchase a connector/adaptor to down load my pics from my sd card, and then from my tablet to my flash stick. This should enable me to free up my 16GB card, and safely store my pics, I plan on doing this on a daily bases. Please offer any comments. Thanks Canuck.

Since you're shooting in jpg, multiple 32 gbcards aren't really necessary. I would recommend two 16 gb cards. That way you have a spare incase one gets lost or damaged. It sounds like you have a good plan. I'm sure there must be a way to upload the photos to your tablet. I have an Acer tablet and it has a slot to accept a flash drive or an SD card.

Hi, please don't forget the South Island where the most spectacular scenery is. I'd be very happy to help you with an itinerary if you let me know when you are about to come south. As the island is very small and narrow the weather changes frequently and can be totally different in the west and east so it pays to know how the patterns change. If you come to CHCH, I'd be happy to be a tour guide (free) as I love showing off my city. Only the east side is damaged and we still have lots of wonderful places to visit.
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you enjoy your visit here.
