Our trip to D.C. found us going to Arlington and viewing (for the first time) an unknown soldier ceremony. Very somber and humbling experience.
"The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a historic monument dedicated to deceased U.S. service members whose remains have not been identified. It is located in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, United States. The World War I "Unknown" is a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the Victoria Cross, and several other foreign nations' highest service awards. The U.S. Unknowns who were interred are also recipients of the Medal of Honor, presented by U.S. presidents who presided over their funerals. The monument has no officially designated name."

I live nearby and visit often (I have friends and relatives buried in ANC). Anyone interested in the 3rd U. S. Infantry Regiment ("The Old Guard") and the details of the ceremony (timing, number of steps, preparation, etc.) can read them here. Fascinating stuff. What the Blue Angels are to precision flying the Sentinels of the Tomb are to soldiering.

I've been there several times. It always brings tears. But I don't understand, how can we know this Unknown Soldier earned a Medal of Honor if we don't even know his name? Or the circumstances of his death?

Outstanding series. I visited the scene as part of an "Honor Flight" for Korean Conflict veterans. It's a visit that every person should make. Thanks.

I always get choked up when i see this. I am an old Veteran & it always makes me think of a lot of the guys & gals that didn't make it back. Thank you for the great shots.
