Correction: Canada Banned The Weapons In 2020

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau banned 1,500 assault-style weapons in Canada, while the US can’t get the Senate to pass background checks.

Via CBC:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today announced a ban on some 1,500 makes and models of military-grade and “assault-style” weapons in Canada, effective immediately.

Starting today, licensed gun owners will no longer be allowed to sell, transport, import or use these sorts of weapons in this country.

….

“These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time,” Trudeau said. “There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada.”

There will be a two-year amnesty period for gun owners to get into compliance, and the government will compensate gun owners for their assault weapons.

Canada’s action makes the situation in the United States all the more disgraceful and embarrassing.

The Canadians acted quickly to save lives before the next mass shooting could happen.

In the United States, it is taking protracted negotiations just to maybe, possibly, but not likely get ten Republican Senators to agree to vote for a federal red flag law and expanded background checks.

More Americans will senselessly die because Republicans would rather cater to weapons manufacturers than keep communities safe.

Absolutely correct. Wake up America. I've heard it said by gun lobbyists "Guns don't kill people, people do" Yes, people with guns kill people. I wonder how those Republican senators would feel if they were faced with someone pointing a gun at their child's head. How many more innocent children have to die before America has the balls to stand up to a the "Gun Lobby"?

And they repeat the lie that "gun bans don't work" and cite examples like the City of Chicago, which is surrounded by states with easy access to weapons. If you look at the example of the UK, which banned semiautomatic weapons after a mass school shooting in Scotland in 1996, you see that they have had no such events since. If asked to sell the government my weapons, as part of a nation-wide ban, I will gladly do it. But a more acceptable - and rational - approach would be to limit sales and possession of guns and ammo to those under 25 years of age (they could shoot at a licensed firing range if they like), require gun owners to take basic training or document safe handling of a weapon (gee - just like we do with cars), universal background checks would be a must (over 80% of Americans favor this), and licensing not of individual weapons, but of gun owners. The 2nd Amendment does say that weapons ownership should be allowed because of the importance of a "well-regulated militia". So let's start regulating...

I have to have a license to go fishing, but not to buy an AR 15 and 2,000 rounds of ammo.

"I wonder how those Republican senators would feel if they were faced with someone pointing a gun at their child's head."
Easy. They would thank god for a gun to save their child's life.

More than likely all three would end up dead.

Just because you're afraid of guns and don't know how to handle them, doesn't mean other people don't.

I have 6 guns and have been trained on how to use them. the difference here is that we don't sleep with them and kiss them good night.

Great good for you. But my guns would be very unhappy if I didn't stroke and fondle them before going to sleep./s
Why do you assume that others aren't as trained as you?

I am sure that every one that owns a gun is trained on how to use them including the nuts that commit these massacres.

I can only say that no true sportsman needs an assault style rifle.

Says you. Constitution says otherwise. The second amendment is NOT about hunting. It IS about self defense and defense against foreign invaders and tyrannical governments.

Yes the Constitution, do you have any idea how much better off you all would be today if the second amendment was left out. Think about it, if you can.

Hypothetical what if. It's there and that's that. I can tell you a historical fact, no hypotheticals required. If the citizenry weren't armed there would be no United States. And we certainly don't have a province called BRITISH Columbia. No slur against the Canadian or British people, just their governments.

What exactly is an "assault style" rifle. Also, you do realize that far, far, far, more people are murdered with handguns than with rifles of any kind, don't you?

In their minds anything that looks scary is an assault rifle.
