I had the opportunity to visit RVR Horse rescue in Plant City, Florida several years ago. They take in the "worst of the worst" cases of neglected and abused horses (and other animals as well), and nurse them back to life. Some don't make it.
I am friends with one of the volunteers there, and I did a photoshoot for a book cover for the owner of RVR. While we were touring the facility I saw this horse and learned that he was sick, emaciated, and slaughter bound when RVR found him. He was not expected to make it. It took almost a full year to get him to the condition you see here in the photo.
Whisky is a senior horse-- his face shows the memory of pain and abuse brought upon him by heartless humans. Thank god he is in loving hands now at RVR. He is one of their 'keeper' horses, that is, he is not available for adoption. He will live a pampered life at RVR until the end of his days.

Beautiful image. I love the old-world color grading on this.
There are some good people in this old world. Hope they can fulfill their promise to this one.
