Yeah but back then you could leave your baloney and cheese with mayo or tuna fish sandwiches in the sun in your lunch sack at school and it didn’t harm you. You could safely ride in the car standing in the front with your face on the dashboard. It was safe for your parents to smoke even in the car with kids in it. Everything was less harmful.

I spent 6 weeks in the hospital in 1970. I had to give up smoking.

It wasn't because the hospital didn't allow smoking. It was because I smoked a pipe and since I was in traction for 6 weeks (broken hip) the hot ashes kept dropping on my chest. It was an effective way to give up smoking, but I don't recommend it.

Who's the "we" as in "we got the bright idea" to make an element collection? Were any teachers involved. To do some of the things that you say you did, you had to handle some pretty nasty chemicals. I believe that commercially, nitroglycerine is made with fuming nitric and sulfuric acids and you can't get any nastier than that. And if you were successful, in addition to a pretty nasty bomb that nitroglycerine is also a powerful vasodilator which could significantly affect your blood pressure, muscle reactions and worse. I think some of these things would top most people's stupid human tricks list. And yet we survived

Well, the people selling it thought it was okay. Other sellers thought putting lead into gasoline was just fine. Smoking was good for you.

Lead in the gasoline served a dual purpose. It prevented knocking and helped to lubricate the valves. Older cars need a lead substitute to keep the valves healthy. And last I heard, small aircraft still use leaded gas because of the number of really old aircraft engines in service. I used to have a gasoline tractor from the '40s or early '50s. I had to buy fuel for it at the local airport.

Correct. Benefits for engines, but not so much for people.
