Not Smart

In the "what were they thinking" category: I got over to Forest Park for a walk yesterday and found the band stand in front of the Municipal Theatre in a state of disrepair with the grounds looking unkept. Not to blame the maintenance and grounds crews who do a splendid job overall -- problem is the band stand is in the middle of the lake with no access as you can see from the Google Maps inset I placed in the upper right corner. Needless to say it's never used as a band stand.

Some forethought should have been used. Maybe put out a few paddle boats and use it for a picnic area.

Nice, but how many boat trips to get all the musicians and equipment to/from it.
Same with landscape maintenance.

That is a shame that it is not being maintained and repaired. Couldn't they build a bridge to be able to access the island? They somehow managed to get crews to it to build it so there should be some way to get to it to maintain and repair it.

Nice photo!!

Well, it tends to reduce vandalism.

It does indeed and I think that may have been an original motivation.

It may look as good as it does because ho one has figured out how to swim over to it while holding a paint rattle can.

Probably ran out of money. Time to build a short bridge wide enough for a golf cart.

Evidently you don't know st Louis 1904 Worlds Fair history
This bandstand was made so that people would not gather close around the musians.
The band arrived and departed by boat.

OK, so used once 118 years ago -- I'm still calling that not smart.

It was a different time. People use to go to band concerts all of the time.
And there were large crowds. It was on hot summer days and there was no
air conditioners. Ladies and gentlemen dressed for those occasions.

It was a part of the fair. There were 1270 visitors. The Chicago world's fair, just previous to st. louis, had less than 1000 visitors.
1904 was the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase. My grand mother was a child when she went there.

There's a bandstand in Tower Grove park a few blocks from me. I've attended concerts there -- really enjoyed Arturo Sandoval some years ago. There's a Sunday Concerts in the Park series that will hopefully get going again with Covid less of a threat. That bandstand is useful and we use it because it's not in the lake it's beside the lake.
