I see there are generic remote controls for various GoPro cameras available on Amazon. Prices are around $30 - $40. Do any of you use a remote with a GoPro?

I find the smartphone app better. No need for a dedicated remote, plus monitoring.

I am in kymarto's camp. I use the GoPro Quick app on my IPhone to control my GoPro. The only time I ever use the app is when we are traveling and I might have the GoPro mounted on the outside of my car somewhere. From inside the car using the app, I can see what the GP is seeing, start, stop, the GP. The only disadvantage I can tell from using the app is distance control. The actual $79 GoPro remote has a 160ft range.

Why use a expensive proprietary remote controller when you can use a free app on your phone?

I use my GoPro 10 to remotely cover rocket launches from the pad...As BlueTooth & Wireless are strictly forbidden (launch pad is swept prior to launch) I've downloaded the GoPro "QRControl" app for my I~Phone (It's FREE) and fully supported by GP Tech folks. I set it to power up about 30 seconds prior to a launch...QRControl allows much more control of a GoPro beside what is normally installed. Available for several versions of GoPro..i.e. GP 6, 7, 8 etc

Would love to see some of your launch images taken with that setup.

I have the remote and use it often. I also use the app. I have the GP7, GP8, and the GP9.

I have the 5, Session 4, Motorsports 3+, and a generic knockoff. All have been underused, but that's about to change.

The newer ones offer amazing improvements, especially in stabilization and manual adjustments.

Yes, that's what I see online. They're still pricey, though. If I was a very active outdoor guy, I might be able to justify one.
