the lens cap is a different size and they don't give you one,in other words, you can't use your existing cap.and it was a crazy amount of money to buy one,,plus shipping!! so i got cap from amazon. i wound up not using it anyway,,poor results

Thank you for your response. I looked at the ad with a wary eye, but, thought one never knows for sure till they hear from someone with experience with a product. Thanks again for the info.

Having been informed of the potential issues with VND filters by an engineer at Schneider, I have avoided using them. Beware of the X.

#1 Variable ND filters can have issues even if they are high quality.

#2 I’d question the quality of a simple single glass filter that cheap.

I just picked up a nice NiSi V6 setup. I like the integration of a CPl. Lot of great quality filters on used market now at good prices.

Several manufacturers are offering a new type of Variable ND filter that supposedly minimizes or eliminates the problem with uneven exposure.

They way they are accomplishing that is by limiting the range of the filter. For example, K&F Concepts is offering an ND2 to ND32 (four stop range, from one to five stops), ND8 to ND128 (also four stop range, from three to seven stops) and an ND32 to ND 512 (also four stop range, five to nine stops). There are some other manufacturers doing this, too.

The Lens Crate ND2 to ND400 is seven and half stop range, (one stop to eight and half stops). I suspect that will have the "iron cross" problem.

Lens Crate mentions other VND ranges, but I couldn't find the filters on their web site.

They call their glass "cinema grade", whatever that means. And they mention 10-layer multi-coatings. (In most filters 8-layer is standard and 16 or more layers is "nano".)

Even though they are made in China, the K&F filters above use Schott B270, a well respected German made glass. And they claim to have 18-layer to 28-layer multi-coatings.

I have not used any of these VNDs. I have been trying a couple K&F Circular Polarizers and am happy with those. They compare well with the B+W filters that I mostly used.

I do like the NiSi holder with the integrated polarizer. I haven't used my rectangular filters in ages though.

I have found that the fixed ND filters to deliver much better results than the variable ND filters.
