In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Czech and German immigrants built a collection of beautiful churches throughout central Texas.
There are more than 20 painted churches in Texas, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Unassuming church exteriors frequently bely the tremendous interior works of art, with hand-painted sculptures, marble walls, intricately designed columns, and vibrant, decorative patterns and stained glass.
During a recent road trip, Anne and I stopped by four of the painted churches near Schulenberg, Texas. These four churches are located near the small towns of Praha, High Hill, Dubina and Ammannsville.
If you are ever travelling between San Antonio and Houston on I-10, stop halfway at Schulenburg and take a one -hour excursion to visit these amazing churches. Enjoy.
