I recently switched from Nikon...but still use the system,to Canon 5DMark II. I have the following Canon lenses and would like to know if there is one lens that I should have to complete my present collection... that anyone thinks is missing.? 24-105,100-400,17-40,28-135,and70-300mm.

You've got the 1-4L, don't see where the 70-300 adds much. And with the 24-105L, why bother with the 28-135? If you're serious, I'd sell the two non-Ls and get a 50mm 1.2 or the 85mm if you really want to splurge.

Without knowing what kind of shooting you do, it's somewhat pointless to recommend lenses. But that's me, the dullest pencil in the box.

Via the zoom lenses, you have the waterfront covered. You do not need another lens, strictly speaking.

That said, let me offer that if you do not own the "L" version of the Canon 70-300mm lens, then you may wish to consider buying it while selling two of your existing lenses: (1) 28-135, and (2) 70-300mm.

Lens lust an expensive condition of mind to satisfy. One self-treatment: Learn the lenses you now own. Select a lens to walk around with for a month, to become knowledgeable and comfortable with its operation. Then repeat with another lens. A benefit of this exercise: You will find a lens that best seems to match your present style of photography.

I would have at least one lens in the bag with an f/2 or lower. A fast lens can come in very handy at times but that is personal preference.

Thanks for the info. I considered selling the two lenses mentioned. I did not buy them they were willed to me by my sister. I did get some use of them but would like to have a bag with lenses for the kind of shooting that I usually do. I travel to Central and South America and shoot the flora and fauna I encounter...as well as the old towns and local people. As I mentioned earlier I recently switched from film to digital and went fro Nikon D70,to D200,to D300 and finally to Canon 5D MarkII. Thank you for your input.

Okay, then, let me please suggest the new Sigma 150mm f/2.8 IS macro lens, or even the earlier version (which I own) without IS. It serves as the lens of choice for many macro shooters.

Seem like you kinda overlapped a lot their. As Jim pointed out you could have gone without the 28-135 and the 70-300. Do you have a wide angle lens, or a macro lens? Those would be the two I see ya might want.

I would recommend one major lens 24-70 F2.8, this is the lens that is attached to my camera as I walk around. This is a magnificent lens for what you say you are shooting.

That is the question I am asking myself many times over. After looking at the YouTube video for DigitalRev (It was a related video I found after watching the ones for the EOS 40d). I am surely considering the "king" of the L series... The 135 2L It is impressive

After your comment I did a lot of thinking and am beginning to see the light. Spoke with my camera man he made similar suggestions as did some other members of the forum. The seed was planted and I followed up on it . Thanks Bob

This is a great lens, but also has limitations, it has to fit the style of shooting you do. I for one look at the L lenses in mostly Zoom styles since they cover such a broad range. Have never had any L lens that did not work exceptionally well.

The Nikon 18- 200mm or the Tamron 18-270mm great traveling light lenses for trips.

I really agree that a fixed, fast prime is handy as in the 50mm mentioned above. I have the sweet and fast Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 (semi wide angle - prime) for my "street lens." (less than $200).
