A friend took this photo of me and my son after one of his games. I like the picture, but I think the sky is blown out. All I have is the free Picasa for PP and I wasn't able to do anything with it.

Just new to this myself, but had a go.
See if this is better!

Try this link, it's free and easy to use and you can choose from different skies.

Hows this?
Masked eveyrthing except for the sky.

Adjusted the brightness and contrast. (There are large areas of the sky burned out with no info to recover. So other then pasting in another sky no much can be done.)

Used color balance to ad some blue to the mids.

Inverted previous selection and adjusted levels.

Lightened faces by dodging the mids a bit.

Looks like I din't do a great job of masking the trees between the subjects heads. I'd just get rid of them, distracting.

Can't do much with that sky with Picasa. Best to use photoshop or a freebie such as Paint.net and cut and paste onto a better picture of a sky with clouds e.g.

Using CS5, I did a Color Select of the different colors of the sky. This gave me a selection of the sky, but it also makes selections in the actual picture. I removed the selections that I didn't want in the picture and it gave me a selection of the colors in the sky only. I then made brightness and contrast adjustments. While the sky was selected, I made a neutral density filter of the sky only. I also used an unsharp mask to sharpen the picture and a few other tweaks. It's the best I could do.

While Picasa is a pretty good editor for most touchups, it appears as if you are about ready for a more sophisticated program. Paint.net and GIMP are both freeware programs, have plenty of built-in features and accept readily available (and free) plug-ins to expand their capabilities. Also, there are plenty of tutorials for both on the net to help the learning curve.

You received plenty of great help on this picture (Yay UHH team!) but you may have noticed most of the fixes were done with something other than Picasa.

Just a thought.

Here's my take on 3 different pics I played with and added a different sky...less than 10 seconds apiece... here's a link to a video I did on how I do it if you get Elements...
