I planted this elm tree from a very small twig taken from my father in law's back yard. It was slowly losing bark in large chunks... Took about 2 hours start to finish... The village was afraid it would fall and damage someone or thing... At least I did not have to pay the bill...

Sorry for your loss. It was part of your life for a long, long time.

Thanks for the sympathy... I will be choosing another that the village will plant for my kids and grandkids to enjoy long after I am gone...

Sorry to see the old trees go. Were you lucky enough to get a slab near the base? Be a nice table and reminder.

Nothing last forever. That is beautiful wood, though. Someone could put it to good use.

Perhaps you could take a cross section of the trunk and make a small table to put in your house.

It’s always sad to see that. We had the wind knock down a large birch tree in our back yard this winter. Turned out, like your elm tree, the birch was sick and dying, too. It will continue to serve, for awhile, as nice firewood.

The last tree that fell here completely destroyed my roof. It was fifty years old, so I didn't mind replacing it - with the help of the insurance company.

I watch a lot of wood turners on YouTube, and they do beautiful things with wood. If I was fifty years younger, I'd get a lathe.

Fortunately this birch tree just took out a 6 foot section of our fence, which I have since fixed. Looks like I may have another one to take down before there’s a repeat performance.

The last three trees we had taken down cost about $1,000 each. I'll take down smaller ones myself, but when they're huge and badly-placed, I call a pro.
