Just getting this thing set up. Why is it that every time I buy a new piece of "technology" I feel like I'm starting at home plate all over again? Well, maybe I should give myself more credit and say 2nd base. And, as usual, there isn't even a modicum of instructions and not even a cleaning cloth that is supposed to come with it. I'm sure I'm going to love it once I'm back in the saddle again. The display is quite nice. 5K. I'll be picking brains at the Apple store a little bit. When you have an iMac that lasted 13 yrs you tend to fall behind a bit in know how. You get comfortable with what you have. At least I do.

I am unfamiliar with this. When you have time I would like to hear how it is working out.

I will. I haven't edited anything yet with it. I just bought an R5 too and that is another learning process. I'm a glutton for punishment.

I recently moved from a 11 year old 27” iMac to a new 24” M1 iMac. For me the data transfer and set up went off without a hitch. The difference in speed is definitely noticeable, especially with apps that are optimized for the Apple chip.
Enjoy your new box!

I have found that setting up Apple products is a straightforward. Last November, I purchased a new MBP 14" and transferred the data from my older MBP using a Time Machine backup.

The Apple Store is there to help you get things setup, transfer data from your old computer etc. They didn't set it up for you?

Give yourself credit. "Getting to 2nd base" can be challenging.

Speaking of Mac Studio, a good friend of mine, who does a lot of high-end video work, just ordered a maxed-out Mac Studio Ultra. He upgraded to the 64 core GPU, 128GB Unified Memory and 8TB SSD. Insane! 8 grand and that doesn't include the monitor, keyboard or mouse/ trackpad.

Hey, If he can afford it. fine. It's twice the specs as mine and really meant for design and music type application.
It's also twice the price. Would definitely have been overkill for me. I don't know what he does but it may be WAY more than he needs. What is the life of a computer these days? 8 yrs? maybe? But if you have plenty of $$ GO FOR IT!

That system is for professional production studios and also for those with too much money! LOL.

My friend does do a lot of rather complex 4k videos with a lot of effects, etc., but I think the system he's getting is overkill for what he really needs. I bought the 24" M1 iMac when they first come out (I pre-ordered as soon as that was possible). Mine is "maxed" with 16GB of unified memory and the 8CPU and 8GPU cores. It's a lot less powerful than even the base Studio Max, but for my needs (mostly photography and a small bit of video) it is more than adequate.
