He guys I'm in the market for a solid macro for my D7200. I am trying to decide between the Tokina 100mm and Tamron 90mm for flowers, plant photos and dog portrats. Anyone have experiece with both or one of the other? I found a like new Tokina for a great price and an excellent Tamron 90mm for about the same price. I see the Tokina does not have vr but that is not a deal breaker for me as I will use a tripod. Mainly looking for sharpness and crisp colors. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
My Tokina 100mm f2.8 was superb. For macro work, the images were clearly sharper than the much more expensive AFS Nikkor 105mm with VR. When capturing the very fine hairs on a spider's legs or the edges of its tiny, round eyes, the Nikkor was too soft for my preferences, while the Tokina was tack sharp.
The tokina on my 810 is incredible. The 7000 was a nightmare with this lens. I tried the tokina on a 7100 what is okay it takes a bit longer vs the 810. Tokina is loud when focusing, the body is metal and it’s solid built.
I have a tamron I use on my 850 and I love it. My friends has the tokina on her 750 and she is pleased with hers but I think the tamron is a little sharper

Nikon of course. If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, get a Nikon.

Might be a bit longish for dog portraits (around 140mm FF-equivalent field of view). Other macro work will be fine.
I have never used the 100mm, but I have used other Tokina lenses. I used one on a Nikon FM2 when I worked for the local paper some years ago. I don't remember the zoom range, but I do remember that it kicked butt when compared to some Tamron lenses. I currently use a Tokina 11-16mm wide angle and absolutely love it. Tokina makes good glass.
I have the Tokina on my Canon 6D II and love it. Had the Tamron 90, but sold it to buy the Tokina and never looked back.
Have the Tamron 90 macro. Bought it used from a guy here in forum. Works great on my D7200
There are two versions of the Tokina. The older/cheaper version is internal focus (IF) and only goes to 1:2. The newer version is NOT internal focus and goes to 1:1. I have and use the older version - very sharp and does not extend. IMO, the older IF version should focus faster. It is worthy to note the current Nikon and Canon macros are IF also.
.
I really like my Tokina 100 on my D7200.
I have the Tokina and use it on my D750. Before the 750, I had a 7200. It’s a great lens, and very sharp with great bokeh.
I have Nikon 60 and 105 mm micros, Tamron 90 and Tamron 180 macros that I use on D5200s, D600 and D810. I have no experience with the Tokina. I would rate the 90 and 105s both superlative. Far superior to the 60. The big surprise is the 180 Tamron on the D810 is as good or better than the others for our high resolution geology/archaeology work. Typically using any or all of these at 1:1 down to 1:4
