Sigma DG 28-300 macro

Hi all. I'm getting a used Sigma 28-300 DG as a walkaround-general purpose lens to use on my D700.
I know it's not the best quality etc. etc. but really don't want to sell a kidney for the Nikon version. It's the first version I think ans is not OS.

Has anybody used it and can give me tips?

Am I only waisting my 100 euro?

Thanks in advance.

Per Sigma Corporation's description: "Equipped with a macro mechanism for close-up photography at 300mm telephoto, with a reproduction ratio of 1:3."

1:3 mag is 1/3 life-size, NOT true macro of 1:1 mag (life-size). Just inscribing a lens barrel with the word "Macro" does not make it so.

I really shouldn't reply to this one because it was only one incident I have heard of but a friend had purchased the first Gen of this lens when it came out and had issues of the black coating inside the lens flake off and left his sensor full of particulates that required constant attention, but not to say that this could have been a one in a thousand flukes but check out the lens and inspect for flaking of the black particles at the bayonet opening, if the coating looks solid to the surface then I don't see any issues and I can't attest to the lens quality since I never got to look at his photos from it since the pre-occupation with the specs to priority away from the quality and he got rid of the lens. I also don't believe Sigma makes this lens anymore?

I've had this lens for a number of years and been very happy with it as a General purpose all in one lens. You are right, it's not top notch glass, but that's easily solved by spending $1k more. I like to hike with my d7000, and this lens is compact, yet has great range. To carry the 70-200/2.8 would require a small truck. Great little lens for travel also when you want to go light.

I have this lens and regularly use it. While not the quality of my more expensive lenses, I find it produces results that are quite acceptable. I use this lens when I am hiking or flying and am unable to take my camera pack. Shooting for commercial applications, I would go with a better quality lens but it is a really good lens for personal applications.

Thanks. Today I'm getting it. Will let you know as soon as I can give it a try.
