Hi all,

I was wondering what flash to buy for my Canon SX50?

Thank you in advance,
Diane

If you're buying new, I'd probably recommend something like the speedlite 320, which is the cheapest flash that provides a full swivel/tilt head for doing bounce flash (for me, this is the primary reason for getting an external flash)
The 430, at a somewhat higher price gives more power ( == better range when taking flash pictures)
Given that you're asking the question, I'm not going to go into other capabilities.
The 580 is probably overkill.

You do not have to buy new. Look at "Refurbished" speedlights on eBay. Just as good as new, and usually with full warranties.

if you don't think you'll ever need more than one flash off camera the 430 and the other 300 model mentioned are fine, but if you think you may need more than one someday, you will need to start with the 580ex11, the others will not act as master controllers for other flash units, only as slaves..good luck

I have had a Speedlight 420 for years. Does an excellent job of bounce flash. My son has a 430 and it is an improvement on the 420. So the 430 should do you very well.

Suggest the 430 EX ll as a good overall flash.

Before you go for the 430EX II, consider the following:
It uses IF (infra red) to communicate with camera which means it has to be in sight to work off camera, unless you purchase Radio Triggers.

The 600 uses RF (radio frequency).

The are other flashes less expensive than Canon's.
Vivitar VIV-285HV Pro, Sunpak PZ40X II, Sigma EF-160, Yongnuo YN560 II, Bower SDF290 and Neewer TT560.

Read the reviews and consider that a basic light setup may require 3 flashes: Main, Fill and Hair

For a while I used a non-Canon flash about the size of the 430 on both my T1i and my G-7, never happy on the G-7, too large, bigger than the camera, I gave up swings and got the Canon 270EXII, works very nice on the G-7 and on the T1i, though I would like a larger flash with swings and bounce for T1, the small flash on the G-7 is perfect in my opinion, perhaps atrip to a camera store and try the feel of the units on the camera would be a good idea, Bob.

But it has a hot shoe and therefore SHOULD work with any Canon Speedlight.

Absolutely, but anything above the 420/430 would probably be overkill. The 600RT was mentioned, but after re-reading the post, it was only mentioned, not specifically recommended.

If he gets to the point of using multiple flashes, then he can get the 580 (or it's successor) as his second flash. He'll probably be moving up to a full DSLR at that point, too. At this point he's a beginner, so he's probably better off with something that's compatible with expansion, does what he needs now and is small enough to encourage him to use (and experiment with) it.
