Trip to Malta

I was part of a photo journey to Malta planned for this summer, which got canceled/postponed for a year. I bought my airline tickets. Pondering if I should still go as planned or pick someplace else. Never been there before. Anyone up for a trip to Malta in June?

Malta is really worth visiting…a most interesting island. Do not miss the Hypogeum (spelling?) suggest you look it up on Google and BOOK your visit before going ….limited numbers allowed . An underground temple older than Stonehenge….

Malta is wonderful... the world's oldest man-made structures and the most bombed place on earth... two very different distinctions... Take pictures... there's a buttery light reflected from the "tufa" stone buildings that's marvelous... brown eyes turn softer and warmer, blue eyes lean green... Everyone's name is "Zammit"... Visit the other main two islands: Gozo, where the beautiful Titan, Calypso, captivated Ulysses, and Cumino, the reputed original source of cumin... somehow, cumin and Calypso tangle wonderfully in my mind... also, try a shore dive- particularly from one of the smaller islands; no telling what you may find... but don't try the wine... it's worse than Arkansas'.

If you can find a copy of The Great Siege of Malta 1565 by Ernle Stanley, it will give you huge insight into the tremendous fortifications on the island.

Don't miss St Johns co-cathedral in Valletta, with the attached Armoury, containing a number of suits of armor etc. plus there are a couple of spectacular Caravaggio's. As a photographer, you will be particularly impressed with his magnificent control of light.

View the harbor - world's deepest natural harbor - from the Upper Barraca (sp?)

It's a tiny island, around 17 miles long by 9 wide, with a population of around 400,000. Traffic can be heavy and nowhere is very far. It has around 450 chapels and churches.

The place has an absolute wealth of history, dating back 5,000 years and it is definitely worth looking at guide books before you go.

It may already be too late to book the Hypogeum (suggested in a previous post) but try anyway. You can also see the catacombs in Medina, a city which is another "must" with beautiful views over the surroundings and a few restaurants on the parapets.

Malta is wonderful. The island has a very rich history, mainly during WWII. Was one of the most bombed places during the war. After that it recovered to what it is today great photo locations and nice people. Have a Great Trip

I concur with positive comments. I visited it in 2005. It will surprise you with its cultural riches.
The most likely choice for the island of Calypso in Homer's Odyssey. Also very likely, the most ancient sailor Ulysses/Odysseus learned to sail directly to it from his island Ithaca on his way to Sardinia's Bay of Cagliari to purchase copper cheaply. He claims to have made this trip nine times. All this ca. 1200 BC.

Malta is one of the most fascinating places I have ever been. Its history includes the Crusades. Alezol's post is right about the traffic. It is really bad and the road signage is worse. But this is all part of Malta's unique charm. The big roundabout with traffic lights inside it is awkward, but no problem ... you can find your exit on your second, third, etc. loop. And they drive on the left side of the road because Malta was a British territory until some time after WWII. Just be alert entering the roundabout because you turn to the left, not the right, when entering them. I envy you on your trip; I'd love to go again.

Independence was 1964.

Malta has no venomous snakes, allegedly because when St Paul was shipwrecked on what is now - huge surprise here - St Paul's Island (basically a small rocky outcropping) he was bitten by a snake and he "cast it into the sea" and banished all venomous creatures.

There are a very few snakes, but rare and nothing to get excited about, and no other harmful wildlife.

My wife and I visited some friends in Malta in May 2018 and had a great time. I suggest that you visit the Viator web site and book some tours of the main Malta city area (Valleta), central part of the island and the Gozo Island day tour.

The website address is: https://www.viator.com/?pref=204&aid=m2747&mcid=33953&supbk=1&tsem=true&supci=1385433803&supag=1118461099&supsc=kwd-19695869689&supai=77309497296953&supdv=c&supnt=o&supkw=viator.com%20tours&supti=kwd-19695869689&suplp=73309&supli=&m=33953&supag=1118461099&supsc=kwd-19695869689&supai=77309497296953&supdv=c&supnt=nt:o&suplp=73309&supli=&supti=kwd-19695869689&tsem=true&supci=kwd-19695869689&supkw=viator.com%20tours&msclkid=4d1e666a44741050e945042d3f16dcf4

We had a great time with the tour guides. Make sure you take a small laptop computer to download your images daily, external hard drive for backup, camera and a 50 mm lens, 70 - 200mm, extra cards and batteries for your camera and a multi-country power converter plug (US and European) to charge your batteries.

I have been to Malta twice and concur with all positive comments. One note: do not expect to get any photos of trees.

Nobody mentioned a wide angle lens. It was my most-used when I was there. A 24-whatever will be very useful. Depending on how long the "whatever" end of your lens is, it may be all you need.
