I used a red gel just below and behind my model for a different effect. Thoughts, comments, critiques.

What is a red gel and how does it work? I like the photo by the way.

Same as Tainkc. Also, I would like to see maybe a few more red hairs highlighted on the top of her head. Or maybe some sort of fan blowing her hair would be exciting.

I think I would have used the gels pointed at the background to frame the model more with a fan on the hair.

Gels are colored sheets of glass or plastic that are placed in front of lights to create an effect. (From "gelatin", a type of plastic film used in early stage lights).

Another top notch photo from you!! I like the use of the gels on the background. However as it stands for me I find that the red highlights don't work. Since they don't wholly frame the face I find them a bit distracting. Adding a second gelled hair light from above or directly behind might do it for me especially if we saw more of her left side hair.

Very nice Val!

I wonder what a red gel would do inside a large soft box as the background.
Would it give you enough of a red background. Just a thought.
I've seen large soft boxes used to create a bright white background.

Love this photo and all your stuff!

Another "wow" photo from you. On all your photos you have the skin tones dialed in. On this one I loved the flowing hair and the use of a green gel to accentuate her green eyes. For me I would liked to have seen more green rimming her hair and less on her right shoulder, which I found distracting from a really outstanding photo.

Val,
What is your primary portrait lens again?
I'm using my 70-200L Is II now. Thinking about trying my 100 macro out.
